Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike will likely have brain damage after her botched execution, during which she chillingly lifted her head and asked if the pain she was feeling was normal.
Pike, 50, was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after the Tennessee Department of Corrections administered two doses of the highly potent sedative, Pentobarbital, but it failed to kill her.
The murderer, who was sentenced to death for the monstrous 1995 slaying of a classmate, was “being provided life-saving measures” in the hospital, her lawyers said – but she likely has a brain injury as a result.
Emory University School of Medicine professor Dr. Joel Zivot – who was retained by Pike’s legal team as a medical expert – told the BBC that the amount of the lethal drug pentobarbital in her blood likely never reached a level high enough to stop her breathing and heartbeat.
“It’s very possible that as a consequence of the delay of the beginning of resuscitation she will have a brain injury,” Zivot explained.

And... who does that? You?
Unbelievably FUBAR. People who did this need their own jail cells and time to think about what they did.

Our veterinarian seemed to have no problem with our cats when they became terminally ill, quick and painless. It has been done for so many years there should be no accidents like this.
Says the guy who would not shoot her in the head.
What’s with these botched executions?
An agenda.
Cyanide. That serial killer, “The Ice Man” Kuklinski, had about 100% success with cyanide. All he had to do was spray it in someone’s face, and it was curtains.
My state has used lethal injection 16 times this year alone and in every case the execution went as planned with no issues whatsoever.
Makes me wonder if this was done deliberately.

I bet they won’t be doing any more for awhile because of this.
I disagree with capital punishment for my own reasons; but if some states are going to have it, they have a duty to do it in a way that doesn’t result in ‘cruel and unusual’ treatment. That’s a principle that has been in our Bill of Rights from the beginning.
Cyanide is both natural and plant-based ...
That should pacify the greenie-weenies! 👺
We’ve had 1,200 pound horses put down. Quiet and painless for the animals, but not so painless for us to order it and watch it.
Degraded drugs??
What did they do, keep her injection for 50 years?
Interesting theological argument, albeit one that has never been accepted by any main denomination of Christendom in the last 2,000 years.
Also mixes secular law (double jeopardy, which is a concept from Scottish law, imported into the USA’s Constitution) with theological.
Further faces the concern that each sovereign may try a person separately (e.g., the federal government and a state), except here it is the State and God, which are (obviously) separate sovereigns.
Dunno. But I went down a number of Wikipedia rabbit holes looking it up. The release or imprisonment (instead of death) was pretty common, including in the USA.
I’m concerned old law may still apply with this case. I’m sure her lawyers will give it a shot.

Their notion of ‘divine innocence’ seems to suggest they interpreted the failed execution as a ‘sign’ that God wasn’t approving of the execution, regardless of the crime...
My argument is that punishemnet by death is cruel punishment albeit maybe not so “unusual”. Execution should be banned.
