I believe autonomous driving can be done and that it can be safer than human drivers. But letting anyone download anything into their vehicles is totally not the way to do it.

I'm a conservatarian, meaning I have a strong libertarian bent to my political philosophy. But in a world filled with hackers, glitchy software, malware and viruses, letting random joes pick their own software means endangering the life and liberty of everyone around them, and that's not libertarian at all. There needs to be robust controls, testing and vetting processes and accountability back to substantial stakeholders when things go wrong.

One would think that automakers and car insurers at least would be saying "do this and your warranty and insurance coverage is so totally, irretrievably gone you'd have an easier time getting them out of a black hole."
