Manhattan Contrarian ping
Proving once again that the solution to a problem caused by government can never be solved by more government.
Remove all rent control, remove a ton of use and other requirements, remove punishing taxes, remove absurd building regulations
Price will go down.
It is amazing that the law of supply and demand cannot be repealed by politicians. When are they going to learn?
$6k a month for rent?
You could move 40 miles and buy a very nice house for that amount. Who would pay that?
Another great one by Manhattan Contrarian. Thanks.
When I first moved to Manhattan back in the 1990s, I sublet a rent-controlled apartment. The original tenant was an elderly couple who somehow was able to “transfer” it to their son when they died. The son then sublet it to his brother, who in turn sublet it to me. The son was a very famous movie producer who made movies everyone here has heard of. I was living in a one bedroom apartment with a massive living room and dining room with a stone fireplace and a large kitchen with high ceilings for $800 / month a block off of Times Square (which, at the time, was still a little sketchy). Another famous case was Alistar Cooke, the wealthy host of PBS’s Masterpiece Theater, living in a rent-controlled apartment most of his life. There is no doubt in my mind why rent regulations don’t keep rent low in New York. As always, people find a way to scam the system.
I guess the alternative is to buy or rent in the suburbs and commute.
And under all the noise about government control, this is happening because people are willing to pay the high rent. Supply and Demand works, even in a Worker's Paradise.
There is nothing wrong with this situation that more expensive government programs can’t make worse.
They are also encouraging rent control beneficiaries to remain in their apartments forever, rather than move out to make room for bigger families or multiple tenants with more need for space.
Leftism can be effective at reducing rent. Check out Detroit.
More crack houses = more affordability
Is that what it costs to rent a "decent" apartment, or is that number skewed by ultra-high-cost apartment rents?
Aren’t the commies running on affordability this year? That’s a shame.
