The towers of Lincoln Cathedral have been built and rebuilt several times (after damage by earthquakes and fires) but at one time it was the tallest man-made structure on earth.

In 1237 the tower collapsed during church services from structural insufficiency. It was rebuilt and in 1307 work was begun on adding a spire. When it was finished in 1311, the tower was 525 feet tall at the peak, making it 44 feet taller than the structure that had held the record for nearly 4000 years, the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
