Brian Wilson had been letting the Manson Family live at his house. A high school classmate of mine kept disappearing for weeks at a time and hanging out in Hollywood. In his brief times back at school he’d try urging us to join him, telling us about this “family” that he’d been staying with, that either was connected to a rock band, or was a rock band, or something. This would have been in 1968, so about a year later we figured out exactly who he had been hanging out with. He was kind of a meek and timid sort, not killer material. And not the only Manson follower that I ended up knowing.

Tom made a fortune four-walling the original Billy Jack, so he set up his own production/distribution company to make and market the sequel, The Trial of Billy Jack. I wrote all the publicity material for that movie in-house, c. 1974-5. It was crazy overreach to do it the way he did, but Tom was kind of crazy to begin with.

I believe you mean Dennis Wilson who was tight with Manson, not Brian.

I think his name is Tom Laughlin, not McLaughlin.

Yeah, McLaughlin (John) was the host of his own talk panel show.

I think Sonny Bono was kind of like that. He just didn't know what the word "no" meant. It was all positivity, all the time, and he just powered through obstacles by persistence and imagination.

Everybody liked it as a teenager. Then in adulthood you realize it was a bunch of woke propaganda BS, just like pretty much everything else around that time.

Yes, Coven was pretty deep into Satanism, through Dawson and their associate Bill Traut; and they were touring with Jimmy Page, Aleister Crowley's evangelist in the rock industry. Their debut album got pulled after the Manson murders, but that didn't stop MGM from signing them in time for Billy Jack.

They bothered me a lot in 1969, it was a shock to see such pure evil making it to such a commercial state, and the album was having an effect.

Vanishing Point was an instant cult classic. Saw it with my girlfriend in a Drive-In Movie Theatre. Souped up muscle car with a blower. Topless girl on a motorcycle.

Vanishing Point was definitely a reflection of its time. It had the hip and easy flow of its time. Man in hot car vs The Man! With beautiful western scenery. The further he progressed across the country the larger his following became, as his progress was tracked by the hip black DJ! And that random meeting with the topless chick …..oh, man! It was the final “come together” moment of the silver screen. Everyone except “The Man” united behind Kowalski (Barry Newman). We rooted for the underdog and, sure enough, he went out in a blaze of glory! Most tv shows with cars and cops after that movie loosely followed it.
