As a former trumpet player, I cannot fathom how this guy couldn’t blow a note out of that horn. Solid gold, Gimmee a break. A fat lot of good it did him….

Either he doesn’t do proper maintenance on his trumpet, or he wanted to sing anyway.

Similar thing happened to me, once upon a time. Saxophone, not trumpet.

I was in the middle of a solo, on Alto. When you're playing Alto, you need the G# key. Mine was stuck.

So I just started scattin', while trying to get that key unstuck.

Once it was, I just went back to playing. I have that on tape somewhere.

That was a great interview. He owns an old beat up trumpet with scratches that has never failed him, but this custom-made $20,000 trumpet did. And in 5 seconds he saved the day by singing the Anthem.
