The US has warned southern states of a possible Moscow attack that would see Russia fire 600 km-range drones from commercial ships at Spain, France and Italy. We examine what is known and how the threat is mounting.
US intelligence services have shared a report with several European countries pointing to a possible Russian operation using drones against targets in Spain, France or Italy, according to Spanish media.
The information was first revealed by journalist Xavier Colás — a former Russia correspondent — in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo. It traces the origin of the alert to CIA director John Ratcliffe's visit to Moscow last August, and sets out a very specific attack scenario: drones launched from merchant vessels disguised as ordinary commercial traffic. According to information gathered by anonymous sources in Lithuania's Ministry of Defence, and reported by El Mundo, the device in question would be the Gerbera, a small Russian drone (barely two metres long and weighing 18 kilos) capable of travelling up to 600 kilometres at around 160 km/h.

Instead, reading further about "anonymous" through Lithuania, then through the Spanish press and then to the English language press, one finds:
"British expert Keir Giles, a specialist in Russian military strategy, argues...."
So "anonymous" through Lithuania to the Spain's press to the English language Euronews, quoting a Brit....
That Brit, who is the only quoted individual regarding the anonymous report....

If the attack consisted of a few (per definition of “few”) drones, that might be plausible.
However, Ukraine would find it impossible to make hundreds of “copycat” drones whose remains could not be traced to Ukraine. Most people have no idea just how good modern forensics can be, in this regard. There are plenty of groups in all those countries who’d be itching to make and have proven such an allegation.
Oops, I chopped out my point that an attack consisting of individual or a few drones would basically be yawned at, in terms of any kind of response. We have already seen this in past events.
This assumes a small drone doesn’t somehow cause a secondary fire, explosion, etc., that kills hundreds.
Why? To sow chaos, fear, and disruption. It is what the Russians are best at, and a VERY longstanding tactic of (not only) theirs.
But why start these rumors and who's starting them and for what reason?

Your post is a bit sloppy too:
The “anonymous sources” in Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence are referred to only in regard to the type of drone likely to be used should such an attack be carried out.
That said, anyone with modest knowledge of Russia’s various drones’ capabilities would arrive at the Gerbera being a likely choice, should Russia go this route.
The quote of the Brit “expert” is what it is, but no more, really.
I do agree that where the article really falls down is lack some sort of substantiation that the purported CIA report actually exists and was provided to the various Euro governments.
OTOH, the attack tactic IS classic Russian in nature. The Spanish gov’t idiots would be the first to miss such a thing / fail to anticipate it.
