President Donald Trump’s administration is reportedly preparing to institute a 90-day ban on diesel exports amid soaring prices, despite Energy Secretary Chris Wright saying such a move would not bring down prices. Wright, in fact, warned a ban could actually make the situation worse in the long run.
Politico reported on the upcoming ban on Wednesday, citing “five people familiar with the discussions” inside the administration.
“The blunt tool of banning diesel exports definitely doesn’t work,” Reuters reported Wright saying on Wednesday while at an event hosted by the Economist in New York.
“If you can’t export the diesel that comes out of our refineries, you run out of places to store it, and you have to reduce US refining, which would put upward pressure on gasoline prices and jet fuel prices,” Wright added, explaining his thinking. Wright is the former CEO of Liberty Energy, an offshore oilservices company he founded.
Diesel prices have hit a record high in the United States as Trump’s war in Iran has dragged on and caused global energy shocks. The average diesel price per gallon in the U.S. was $6.52 on Wednesday, which is up a whopping 76% year over year, reports AAA.
Politico noted that the “legal process” on the export ban is still in the works, adding that the move “has created splits inside the administration and with the oil industry, which has warned that any short-term benefit would be outweighed by higher fuel prices in the future. Any halt to shipments would be the first restriction on U.S. energy exports since the Obama administration lifted a decades-old ban on oil exports in 2015.”
Can someone explain to me, why with all the available gas and oil in this country and now from other countries why the price up esp that there is oil going through the Strait.
The demand outweighs our capacity. We need to build more refineries. The Eco-Nuts won’t let us do it.

Is there unlimited supply of rail tankers that can sit idle for months not transport by anything? It’s amazing to me how many people here are better versed than the experts on everything because it isn’t what they want to hear. The oil companies to economists to the Energy Department all say the wrong thing but nope, some internet posters know there’s other ways they didn’t think about. They do not have the capacity to store the amount of diesel necessary if exports were stopped. It’s not possible.
The ‘Rats have promised refiners a path through the wilderness. Oil will be De Beers diamonds - little will sell, but at monopolistic prices. They have sworn (to refiners) that any time they gain power, the Green Energy Scam will advance.
Who would invest in refining capacity or pipelines under such conditions?
Trump will have to brick the camel, to make it drink.

I am glad you posted that. It seems as though Unkraine is making matters worse in the US as well as Russia. So, why are we still helping Ukraine?

It sounds good on paper, and understand the President’s concern. But markets are complex and don’t always react to “simple” solutions the way we’d like. Also, in light of the Conservative Treehouse post above, maybe all it will take is a bit more time.

The plans for a Data Center near me wanted about 300,000 gallons of diesel storage, to run the backup generators if the grid couldn’t handle it.
No company is a voter and company owners are often foreign.

But the point is, the demand for gasoline, home heating oil etc, doesn’t change much based on the price. People still need to heat their houses and drive to work. I don’t think the optional use varies much.
I was referring to capacity to store. There’s an excess of something like 1.5 - 1.7 million barrels of distillate fuel per day. Over 90 days? 150,000,000 of surplus if you don’t slow production. You can’t store that much. The largest rail cars hold 700 barrels. You’d need hundreds of thousands just sitting there ultimately. It’s not feasible.
Absolutely. It just diminishes their cashflow. And ultimately their wealth.
Because the traitors and speculators make the price go up with every bit of false negative news which the pro-Iran media dutifully supplies in great quantities.
