They really think they’re the only ones that picked cotton? There were tons of cotton farmers that didn’t have slaves ... they picked their own cotton. My mother in law and all her brothers tended to their parents cotton fields. And their parents did the same for their parents. Many generations did the same.

Agreed. No slave owning in my ancestry (north Alabama). There were very few slaves in that region anyway.

My father grew up on a farm picking cotton as it was still the family's cash crop. When he was a teenager, his father switched their cash crop from cotton to chicken houses.

Yep. This was in fact the norm in the antebellum South. Yeoman farmers would devote 20%, 30% of their land to growing cotton so they could sell it for cash to buy all the things they couldn't make from clothes to glass windows to shoes to agricultural tools, etc etc. They and their kids obviously picked that cotton. The VAST majority didn't own any slaves.

My husband’s family had a 100 acre cotton farm and his father’s THIRTEEN WHITE BROTHERS AND SISTERS picked the cotton.
