President Donald Trump was highly complimentary of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) when speaking to the press outside Gracie Mansion on Monday.
The feed was provided by Spectrum News NY1 and taken by CNN in the midst of the White House press pool pushing back on Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
In his remarks, Mamdani said the two discussed, “how we can make it easier to afford life in this great city that we call our home.”
Trump called Gracie Mansion “a special place,” adding, “I’ve seen it with numerous different mayors. And I said some great ones and some not-so-great ones. So, hopefully you’re going to be a great one,” Trump directed at Mamdani.
He continued:
I’ll be able to say, you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a start. So, I just want to thank the mayor for the invitation. I’m in New York to do the United Nations tomorrow. I have a lot of meetings right now today, very important meetings, with heads of different countries. But this is like a little bit of old home week for me because so many things we’ve done, so many things from the beautiful home or house or building standing right behind me.
When taking questions from the press, Trump said Mamdani had the “potential” to be a “great mayor.”
“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor. You have to understand, I want what’s good for New York,” Trump said of his hometown. “I want what’s good for the country. So, if I had a choice of having him be a bad mayor or horrible mayor, I don’t want that. I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential.”
Trump has been highly critical of Mamdani, a democratic socialist, recently ripping the New York mayor and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as “terrible” for “laughing” during a ceremony for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. In fact, the two were warmly greeting each other, not “laughing” as reported by MAGA pundits.
Trump has referred to Mamdani as a “communist,” and Mamdani has hit back at Trump, calling him a “fascist.”
When the two met at the White House, however, Trump was very complimentary of Mamdani, saying he was “better looking in person,” in a cozy meeting that shocked the political world.

Trump is Michael Corleone, Mamdami is Barzini.
His “potential”, when measured, is one billionth of one volt.
They do share a love of handouts, government control, and collectivist redistribution.
Who can believe either one of them when you hear crap like this?
NY will be fine this year. The money from Albany pulled his butt out of the fire. I am pretty sure that ‘extra’ billions from the state every year will not be forthcoming.
It’s year 2 and year 3 that will be the tell.

Trump trying to play politician. First sentence is in Yogi Berra territory. :-)
The curse of heightened expectations. Mamdani is never going to live up to them, and Trump will be in a position to say, “You’re fired!” just like the days on The Apprentice.
No potential whatsoever. Trump should be pointing to his Marxist faulures.
Trump is a New Yorker. He knows that he cannot pack-up his Tower and leave. I am sure that Melania views Florida as a prison.
Most any mayor has the potential to be a great mayor, at the beginning of their term. President Trump wants that to be the case at the end of Mamdani’s term. Mamdani will certainly not be able to blame his own failures as a mayor on President Trump, as the president has just shown he will not put his weight on the scales against Mamdani being a great mayor.
Sad, but true, but albeit with different motivations.

Maybe Trump is giving the dummy enough rope to hang himself.
