President Trump unveiled his new granite helipad on Monday, but none of the major TV networks carried the event as tensions between the media and the White House escalated.
Trump used a pair of golden scissors to cut the red, white and blue ribbon on the project he dubbed “a work of art” while surrounded by construction workers who built the White House pad, which features the seal of the United States and is estimated to cost $6 million.
The White House aired the event on its social media channels, but Marine One, sitting on the helipad behind the president with its engine on, was so loud that Trump’s remarks could not be heard.
There was no national media TV camera — and its powerful boom mic — to record the event and pick up his comments.
The TV networks, earlier Monday, announced the suspension of the TV pool, the dedicated camera that distributes footage of the president’s events with the wider press corps and outlets around the world, after the White House barred CNN from participating.
The White House shot back, saying in a statement: “Access changes are nothing new. What is new, however, is the sudden claim that it becomes sacred only when the outlets are friendly to the Radical Left. The rule was never ‘every outlet gets in.’ It was always ‘our side stays in.’”

Trump banned some of the networks that operate the pool. This is the result.
The whole point of the pool is so the best camera and sound crews in the business take it in turns to set up a really good set of cameras in the best spots and ensure the sound recording is going to capture the President’s speech in complete clarity instead of hearing him drowned out by the background noise.
The convention is that if the pool crew is strictly recording the event and the speech, at the best possible quality, all other networks can use the footage.
So there’s no editorial bias in the pool crew. And anyone who thinks that this was ever a problem is buying into a complete nonsense.
The pool setup benefits the MSM, the pro Trump media, the micro bloggers and social media commentators. They all rely on professional footage because using camera phones is not a viable alternative unless you want White House reporting to look cheaper and less professional than literally every other country on the planet. Even the poorest countries wouldn’t want their official presidential speeches to be captured on wobbly phones so the world laughs at how cheap it looks.
The other networks weren’t even given enough notice to step in to cover the pool. So they put a statement out.
Trump banned the pool without thinking, who’s going to be there instead. None of his asslicking fawning fanboys with iPhones made it. His own White House crew couldn’t set up a decent sound stage.
The result was, it could’ve been a speech for the ages but we’ll never know because at Trump’s own insistence it had to be captured by an amateur bodge. It could only have been worse if the only people able to film it were the grifters from X and Telegram.
Consequences.
Name any single Presidential speech that the whole world can quote from that wasn’t captured by vetted professional crews meticulously setting up the equipment.
Editorial bias and hostile questions can be edited out later. Hot mike slip ups. Zingers can become memes.
You lose all that if the impartial crews are not capturing the whole thing, unedited, first.
Wanting a vice like grip on the footage just so opponents can’t challenge anything is TOTALITARIAN and goes against the First Amendment values that the USA promotes. Trump doesn’t want a free and independent press, he wants all reporting to be slavishly Pro Trump. The thing about Pravda was, we all could see that it only reported the truth if the Kremlin decided what the truth needed to be.
We in the UK are already caught in that trap. The Left loves Cancel Culture.
Pray that Trump’s repudiation of press and media freedom doesn’t open the door for a Cancel Culture in the USA that gives a future Democrat president more power to eliminate press/media scrutiny than Obama and Biden could ever have dreamt possible.

Précis:
In 1966, Robert Sherrill (a Washington Correspondent who was already established) applied for and was denied a White House press pass by the Secret Service. So he took it to court.
The SS cited “security reasons” but couldn’t explain what they were, couldn’t point to a defined set of criteria, and provided no mechanism for unsuccessful applicants to understand the reason for the refusal.
He won, in the sense that the District Court ruled that the Secret Service needed to have a more transparent set of criteria, and suitable processes - it couldn’t just arbitrarily deny access to an established correspondent (i.e. without any probable cause, due process or right to recourse) if doing so would be a violation of press freedom (via the First and Fifth Amendment rights.)
The Secret Service appealed, and their appeal was shot down. Its ruling was quite explicit:
“Denial of a White House press pass is violative of the first amendment only if it is based upon the content of the journalist’s speech or otherwise discriminates against a class of protected speech.”
This tells us three things.
One: If journalists get excluded because of their felony convictions, or because they’ve made statements they’ve made that personally threaten POTUS, or because there is a genuine risk to national security (e.g. they’re agents of enemy states posing as journalists), then denying them access to the briefings would not violate the First Amendment.
Two: A blanket decree from POTUS or the Secret Service to deny access to established Washington journalists and media figures AS WELL AS camera and sound crews who’ve all had prior access to the White House briefings, based only on them working for a domestic news outlet, COULD violate the First Amendment.
Three: because POTUS is totally unapologetic about the motivation, his actions appear to be a textbook First Amendment violation scenario as outlined by that Appeals Court.
6 northeastern media outlets with a White House news media monopoly, 5 of them severely liberally biased, of 800 outlets nationally won’t report White House news and events. How is that a lose lose for this administration? Smells like winning to me for this administration and the other 794 outlets across the country looking for a little equity and inclusion in the White House news department
