18 September 1944 — Peleliu
Col. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, CO of the 1st Marines, greets a Navy admiral at his command post. Shirt off. Coral dust. Heat that could cook a man. Third day of the fight for Bloody Nose Ridge.
His regiment landed on White Beach 15 September and took the worst of the island. In ten days they lost more than half their strength. He stayed forward with them.
By then he already had four Navy Crosses:
Nicaragua, 1930
Nicaragua, 1932
Guadalcanal, 1942
Cape Gloucester, January 1944
The fifth came later at the Chosin Reservoir, 1950. Only Marine ever awarded five.
Good night, Chesty. Wherever you are.
Semper Fi.

I just used a shopping bag that had Chesty, Dan Daly and John Basilone on it.

Tragic story about his son Lew Jr.

That was my only complaint about the actor who played Chesty in “The Pacific”. He was too tall. Did a great job, though.

Just saw this picture - I believe that’s my Dad in the background just to the left of Chesty Puller.

He was 1st Marine Div, on Guadalcanal, Peleliu and others same timeframe. The took a hit from mortar shrapnel in his leg on Peleliu, was sent back to the states after that.

I’ll pull some old pics.

Thanks for posting.

p.s. My Dad’s last name was McM....., in the event there were any other names showing with that pic. He passed in 2014.

Semper Fi to your dad. Mine commanded an LCT on Utah Beach.

Of course, I had to join Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.

He passed in 1986.

I read about the 'frozen Chosin'. See: "This kind of war", by T. R. Fehrenbach

THAT was something else!

Too bad James Cagney probably was too old for the role. He'd have been perfect. He was outstandingly athletic, easily played a tough guy, and stood only 5'5" or so.
