Three Georgia counties flagged by Trump administration for using non-English election materials
Georgia Recorder ^ | 9/18/26 | Maya Homan

At least three Georgia counties were listed on an internal memo of jurisdictions across the country that offer election materials in languages other than English, according to internal records from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb counties were all listed in the report, which was emailed to a number of top officials at the department in December, though the memo noted there could be other jurisdictions in the state that translate election materials. The email said the list was “outlining requirements for prosecution of voter related charges,” and was signed by the department’s acting director of border policy, though the official’s name is redacted.

The documents were first reported Friday by NPR and obtained independently by the Georgia Recorder.

Recipients of the memo include undersecretary for the office of strategy, policy and plans Rob Law, assistant secretary for border security and immigration Eric Ruark and former election activist Heather Honey, who now serves as deputy assistant secretary for election integrity for the Trump administration. The list was obtained as part of a public records request filed by the Democratic National Committee.

Only U.S. citizens are allowed to vote in American elections, but advocates for immigrant communities in Georgia say some naturalized citizens may struggle to understand ballots written in English. Section 203 of the federal Voting Rights Act requires local jurisdictions to offer ballot access in languages besides English whenever there are either 10,000 residents or more than 5% of the population who speak a given language and lack English proficiency.

So Trump is assuming that if a person is more comfortable understanding a language other than English it must mean they are voting illegally? That is quite a stretch.

“Section 203 of the federal Voting Rights Act requires local jurisdictions to offer ballot access in languages besides English whenever there are either 10,000 residents or more than 5% of the population who speak a given language and lack English proficiency.”

The above does not mean that local jurisdictions are prohibited from doing so when the population specifics are not met. It just means they shall do so in the circumstances listed.

I recall English and Spanish ballots when voting in New Mexico in the early 1990s. IIRC it was the same ballot but with both languages.

No it just means the USA is under absolutely no obligation to cater to the fact that you don’t speaka our language. Let me know if you need to know what 2+2 is.

It's because the New Mexico Constitution lists the official languages of the state as both English and Spanish. All official documents must be in available in both languages.

I don’t think anyone said they were obligated to do it. But there is nothing preventing them from having options for people if they want it. 2-2 is also a thing. The answer is how many official languages there are in the US.

If you want to live in the United States, learn the language. If I wanted to move to France, I would learn French.

When I worked Security in south Georgia and we had an incident, I bet my partner on the county sticker. Gwinnett and Cobb were the top two. Didn’t see much from DeKalb.

It’s called assimilation. You don’t understand English but you want to vote in our elections? Hmmm. And you insinuate I’m a racist if I don’t accommodate?
I believe California prints ballots in 37 different languages, hardly a model for the country. Lots of other countries “stretch” their laws this way? Do tell.

No one insinuated anything. I stated that there is nothing obligating them to provide one language. They are free to present in however many languages they choose. It’s basic, factual information.

Cobb and Gwinnett used to be conservative and Republican, but were overrun by Yankees, other foreigners, and Atlantans. Between Emory University and Atlanta, DeKalb has always been a liberal hot bed.

I don’t care how they speak. I care how they vote. Why would I want to do anything that would risk excluding people? If they understand the platform better then there’s a better chance of earning their vote.

Absolutely right. Like how that was worded.

Voting often involves more than just selecting a candidate. Consider how confusing a proposed amendment can be even for native language speakers. Then consider that someone who learned English as a second language may be quite proficient speaking the language but may have trouble when reading complex materials in English. I’d rather these voters had no confusion over what they were voting on. Remember too that Dems are notorious for wording amendments to be deceptive. Clarity matters.

The voting rights act was not written by me. I’d likely scrap much of it. But it is still the law and that section does apply.

“...some naturalized citizens may struggle to understand ballots written in English.”

Then get your ass out of this country and never come back, you won’t have this problem anymore.
