Columbia University remains locked down like a war zone after anti-Israel protests — and students feel punished

Columbia University was crippled almost three years ago by anti-Israrel protesters, who shut down campus with an illegal encampment. And still, all this time later, the campus gates remain closed to the public.

“There was a complete time and place where [closing the gates] was justified and was necessary,” Nicholas Baum, a 21-year-old senior studying economics, told The Post. “But now it’s a constant and, frankly, outdated reminder [of the protests]. We’re in a completely different environment.”

Current seniors are the only undergraduates on campus who remember a time before their school was sent into chaos by the October 7th 2023 terror attack by Hamas on Israel.

Students were first required to scan their Columbia ID cards that month in order to gain access to campus, as part of the school’s attempt to calm ongoing protests and keep outside agitators from the community.

But that temporary measure became permanent when an encampment popped up on campus that spring. The measures remain despite protest activity on campus heavily dwindling. In May 2025 handfuls of students — some of whom were Jewish — chained themselves to gates to protests the arrest of protesters, while a library takeover resulted in the arrest of 78 people. By April this year, a pro-Palestine protest outside the University’s Hamilton Hall attracted around 20 people, video shows.

Newly installed university president Jennifer L. Mnookin sent a letter to the community on September 7 establishing a committee to decide when and how to reopen the campus in Morningside Heights.

A spokesperson for the university told The Post President Mnookin is hoping the committee will offer recommendations for next steps by the end of the semester. Students, including junior and political science major Aum Desai, are rolling their eyes at the bureaucracy.

“We’re in a completely different environment.”

Yeah, all those virulent Jew haters saw the error of their ways and repented. Uh huh.

If you can get accepted to Columbia, there are many other university options. Why would anybody go there? Columbia should be out of business. I would never hire a Columbia grad. They’re either a trouble maker or a dummy.

I used to wonder how some societies devolved into such craziness that the govt/people ended up targeting folks with higher educations and even those who wore glasses.

Now I see all of our higher education institutions, with the ivy league schools at the top of the list, having become mainline IV inlet tubes running marxist anti-wes5 anti-human poison directly into the arteries of our culture....and now I see how those other societies ended up where they did.

We’re past the midpoint on the number line of that journey..

I think pur off ramp will be dissolution of the Republic rather than going full Pol Pot

Back in 1979/1980 I attended an event on the Columbia campus. The campus was surrounded by a rough area. The students should want the campus closed. I would never attend college there.

Columbia University has been a terrorist school since the 1960’s.

students feel punished

Actions have consequences - sometimes long lasting ones (like 9/11/01)

Better these skulls full of mush learn that now.

Attended Columbia 1982-1986. It was getting much better at the time under Ed Koch, with the word “gentrification” applied.Still, walking a few blocks in any direction would be unwise.
The hot issue on campus was Apartheid in
S. Africa. George Stephanopoulos was a leader of the protests. A big difference then was that you
could have an opposing view without being utterly vilified. We debated in classrooms, dorms, dining rooms, student lounges, etc. We had good friends who disagreed.

Law School was when all that changed. Absolute Stalinist/Maoist views from the Dean on down. Started Federalist Society (one of the early chapters) and had our postings torn down. We held a special Heterosexual Pride event during “Pride Month” (or week) where we showed a biographical video about the “Life of John Wayne, a Great American Heterosexual” (as stated on the poster).

They went nuts. Oh, the salad days.

Nowadays? Ruled by Mongols and Saracens.

After some Pallies caused a ruckus a couple years ago, the University of Southern California was closed to the public. Until then, the campus had been completely open. I had checked out a book from the library, and to return it, I had to go through a checkpoint, show my papers, and explain why I was entering the campus. The campus is once again open, but access is restricted to only a few entrances that are watched by security guards.
