Veteran national security reporter Bill Gertz posted to social media on Wednesday that wild "rumors are flying" about Chinese leader Xi Jinping's health and a possible plot to oust him from power.

"Rumors are flying in China over Xi Jinping begin [sic] taken ill during his visit to India. They include claims that he suffered a minor illness to experiencing a stroke worsened by failure to treat early," wrote Gertz, a national security correspondent for The Washington Times.

"Some wild claims say rival group armies are mobilizing for civil war. No confirmation but Treasury Sec Bessent is meeting with Chinese counterparts today and we'll see if the summit for Sept. 24 is still on," he added.

Gertz, a former fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, has written eight books and been at the Washington Times since 1985.

Gertz's post quickly raised eyebrows across the media. Conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt responded, "Bill is a serious reporter. Has been on China Watch for decades. So watch this space."

He’s meeting with Trump next week. If he cancels we’ll know if he has a problem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gertz

William Gertz has been a media
fellow at the Hoover Institution on War,
Revolution and Peace at Stanford University.[2]

In 2008, Gertz was subpoenaed to the Santa Ana,
California federal court to testify in the case of
Chi Mak, who was convicted of providing United States
Navy technology to China. Gertz refused to answer
questions about his sources, citing the Fifth Amendment.[3]

Gertz was a senior editor at the Washington
Free Beacon until October 2019, when he was
fired upon the discovery of “a previously undisclosed
financial transaction.”[4] Gertz had taken a
US$100,000 loan from Guo Wengui, whom Gertz
called a “leading Chinese dissident” in his reports.[5][6]
Gertz later rejoined The Washington Times full time.[6]

>> There are cheap labor alternatives like India, Vietnam and Indonesia who I’m sure are ready and able to pick up the slack if China implodes.

Maybe — and I realize this is a far-fetched, crazy idea, but bear with me — we could make our own stuff right here in ‘Merica! Could it happen?

>> If Xi is overthrown, he will be replaced by someone worse.

Oh I don’t know. Xi replaced someone not as bad. Maybe another not-as-bad one will rise up. The Chinese people have to be fed up with their government in many ways. Prayerfully optimistic here.

They’re drawing straws to see who goes into his room and poke him with a stick to see if he’s dead or alive

You sure you’re not confusing Xi with Jao Beidan? :-)

"Prayerfully optimistic here."

Me too. Is there a limit to God's suffering of the people? Especially the children. May His will be done.

Could be something re Xi health. Could just as easily, if not more likely, be a ploy to back out of the Sept. 24 meeting with Trump.
