California high school students are scoring more straight A’s than ever – but it’s not necessarily because they’re getting smarter, according to data and education experts.
The number of college applicants reporting flawless GPAs of 4.0 or higher has doubled over the past decade even as state testing shows a post-pandemic plunge in reading and math comprehension — revealing a grade-inflation crisis that’s sending students who can’t even do fractions into top universities.
Over the past decade, the number of students applying to the University of California system with straight A’s skyrocketed from 52,989 in 2015 to 103,138 for the class of 2025, with a notable jump during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022, according to UC data reviewed by The Post.
It’s part of a dangerous slide in grading standards as teachers hand out stellar marks simply for doing the bare minimum, according to critics like Glenn Sacks, who teaches social studies in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“When I was hired at one LAUSD school, the administrator showing me my classroom — a man I liked and respected — told me, ‘Don’t fail too many kids–remember, it’s easier to replace one teacher than 35 students,'” Sacks told The Post.
He cited growing pressure on teachers, which started during COVID and continues today, to eliminate D’s and F’s in order to shore up enrollment and attendance. Teachers were told that a significant number of failing grades meant instruction needed to be revised, he added.
Charles Cole, an education advocate who attended California high schools before graduating in 2001, told The Post that grade inflation has been brewing for decades, only to grow much worse in recent years.

Treat everyone the same, and there is no competition, no incentive, no growth. Just ask anyone from Venezuela, Cuba or any other commie country.
A lot of arrogant young Leftists are strutting around, convinced that they are always the smartest person in the room — because, you know, like, they got, like, a 4.0 GPA, you know.
Denial is the most dangerous thing there is.
Many high schools offer advanced classes beyond the standard stuff. These classes are supposed to be for better students, cover more material, and are more difficult. An "A" in one of these classes is worth 5 points not 4 so it's possible to have a GPA above 4.0.
I worked for LAUSD, and that is 100% accurate. They wanted us to use "Mastery Grading," wherein if the student could produce one sample that indicated that they basically "got it," we should give them an A. So they could do almost no work, but if they could replicate what you showed them once, usually right after you showed them,(or by copying someone else's work) good enough. They didn't remember it, because they only had to do it once, and it was forgotten by lunch, and they certainly developed no ability to apply themselves to any long-term endeavor, but we were still supposed to give them an A.

The fact the jump started in 2021 just proves how good of a president Biden was.

They also pressure teachers not to make the exams too “high-stakes.” You’re supposed to structure your grading so that the students get lots of easy little assignments to build up enough points that if they blow the exam, it doesn’t lower the GPA too much.
This does not surprise me at all.
In 2009 I went to a niece’s high school graduation ceremony in Colorado.
200 students in the graduating class and 120 of them were honor students.
For decades the public school system has been teaching SELF-ESTEEM.
I would say the public schools have been very successful in graduating students who have great SELF-ESTEEM, but are DUMB.

The final exam determines their final grade.
It consists of 2 questions:
1. Do you hate Trump?
2. Is Socialism the best way to govern?
A byproduct of Melanometric Privilege?
Gotta pump up the numbers to get them into kollage.
They have high school kids reading at a fourth grade level. We all know the reason.
I guess I could have had a 4.0 GPA when I graduated, but that was a long time ago when times were more realistic & I didn’t graduate in California. Sounds like a teacher’s union ploy to me & I doubt we even had a teacher’s union where I lived in my day. So my test scores, while not that terrible, allowed me to graduate, but I had nowhere near a 4.0 as best I can remember. I did have all the info since graduating, but can’t find it now.....& I am far too old to worry about it. At least whatever my test score was...it was honest.

The other thing that has changed dramatically in the last 10-20 years is the number of AP courses offered to high school students which allow them to push their grade point averages WAY above 4.0 easily.
Many high schoolers today graduate with enough AP credits to skip an entire year of college, which saves them a massive amount of college debt.
