The U.S. Navy has lost an advanced uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV), and it is now in Iranian hands. Here’s what we know about the Dive-LD drone and its apparent seizure, and its implications.
Authorities in Iran said earlier today that they had retrieved a U.S. Dive-LD uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) largely intact near the Strait of Hormuz. The regime in Tehran subsequently released pictures and video clips of the UUV being lifted out of the water, seen at various points below. This looks to be the first known instance of an operational deployment of the Dive-LD. This is still a relatively new capability for the U.S. Navy that only began entering service a little more than a year and a half ago. American officials have previously confirmed the use of UUVs, in general, to help keep the Strait of Hormuz free of Iranian naval mines, one of many threats that have dramatically slowed maritime traffic through this critical waterway.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “captured one of the most modern, unmanned, and smart submarines … at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz in a complex intelligence and operational action at dawn today,” according to a statement shared earlier today via Iranian state media. The exact circumstances surrounding the seizure remain unconfirmed.

Stupid Palantir didn’t put a self-destruct charge on it? Did they learn NOTHING from the advanced drone Obama let Iran keep?
I remember when we left a CH 53 in Iran. They were worried it was booby trapped so the shot it full of holes and in the process of shooting they killed a couple of their soldiers. Hopefully, something similar happened with the sub.

Everything should have been done to destroy the drone and any recovery operation by hostile nation(s).

I can imagine a news scenario like this:
Monday: "Pentagon announces that Iran is in big trouble! Our most advanced submersible is now operating off their coast! This miraculous machine contains cutting edge technology more advanced than anything any other nation has!"
Tuesday: "Pentagon reluctantly admits than Iran has captured a US submersible off their coast.
Wednesday: "Pentagon says it was an older Model that malfunctioned and did not carry any sensitive information."
This article makes something into nothing. UUV’s have been around for many years and this is probably not the first one they have gotten. Uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) have been around for nearly 70 years, with the first true autonomous underwater vehicle built in 1957. Modern militaries, scientific groups, and commercial industries use advanced modular UUVs for deep-sea mapping, mine clearance, and long-range missions.
Countries have been developing them for many years:
United States: Operates advanced systems like the REMUS and the Boeing-developed Orca extra-large UUV.
China: Rapidly builds large autonomous vehicles like the HSU-001 and extra-large UUVs for regional surveillance.
Russia: Deploys strategic UUVs like the nuclear-powered Poseidon and the Sarma-D.
United Kingdom: Develops autonomous platforms including Project Cetus for the Royal Navy.
Australia: Partners with defense firms to build heavy autonomous systems like the Ghost Shark.
France: Funds uncrewed combat underwater vehicle projects through the DGA and Naval Group.
Germany: Designs modular underwater craft such as the Greyshark.
Sweden: Develops large autonomous underwater systems through Saab and the defense administration.
Ukraine: Actively develops and deploys asymmetric uncrewed underwater vehicles, such as the Sea Trident series, for Black Sea defense
Other countries like Japan and Pakistan actively research, manufacture, or procure autonomous underwater systems for mine clearance, cable protection, and anti-submarine warfare.
And since China and Russia have them, you can be assured Iran does too. Trust me, this was some hack newsdog’s effort to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

You’d think every such device operating in a hostile environment would have an effective self-destruct system.
But I wouldn’t blame the company. They’re just building to specifications. I’d blame whoever made the specs. I’m not an expert. Maybe such a system would add a couple of pounds to the device, and so was (unwisely) omitted.
Assuming the story is even true, that is.
I think I see the problem here. If it was an unmanned underwater vehicle...
