I drove a GM X-car when I was in high school (1980’s). It was rough, incomplete welds, made a knocking sound every time you turned the wheel, etc.
I remember my track coach had an Accord and one of my teammates had a Celica. Sitting in those cars the quality of them was astounding compared to my car.

tghen, when the OPEC gas crisis hit, the only options for small gas-friendly cars were ones from Japan, and lo and behold, American buyers found out that Japanese cars were built BETTER than the US junk ... end of story ...
