I don’t think ‘DEI’ had anything to do with her tenure at NASA.

Never said it did. But the choice to name the telescope for her occurred at a time (the present, roughly) that NASA was and is up to its ears in DEI. Leadership there seems to feel that it must "atone" for NASA in the past being "too white" and "too masculine".

And this illustrates (in part) the core of why I absolutely DESPISE "diversity" policies. Their very existence casts a pall over the careers of people who might be seen in any way to have benefitted from them.

You can make decisions based on merit, or you can make decisions based on "diversity".

You cannot do both; to pretend otherwise is dishonest.

We wouldn't be having this conversation if NASA were today a clean meritocracy.
