LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Ill. (WKRC) — Two people were arrested after deputies found four children and two dogs riding inside the enclosed cargo area of a U-Haul box truck during a traffic stop in Illinois, authorities said.
A Livingston County sheriff's deputy stopped the U-Haul at about 6:05 p.m. Thursday on an Interstate 55 on-ramp in Pontiac, according to the sheriff's office.
The driver told deputies the group was moving from Louisiana to Michigan.
During a search of the truck, deputies found four children, two adults and two dogs traveling inside the enclosed box portion of the U-Haul, the sheriff's office said.
A body camera image released by authorities shows the interior packed with large plastic storage bins, a laundry basket, clothing and other belongings. Several people can also be seen inside the cargo area.
The children were taken to a hospital to be examined for possible heat-related injuries. Authorities did not release additional information about their conditions.
Roy Hamel II and Sabrina McKinney were arrested and each charged with six counts of endangering the life or health of a child, according to a sheriff's office release. Hamel was also charged with driving with a suspended license.
Both were taken to the Livingston County Jail.

There’s no I 55 in Michigan, and Pontiac isn’t in Livingston County, so the Livingston County sheriff wouldn’t have any authority there.

I used to ride with my cousins in the bed of my uncle's pickup truck. If they're from Louisiana, they're probably used to the heat. And they don't look like they're suffering from heat stroke in the photos.
Just another excuse for an arrest and DCFS to get more cash reimbursement.

They likely knew that ahead of time, but I suspect the collective IQ is somewhere south of 65.
Very happy the cops checked on those kids before somebody died.
And no side impact protection either
Plus I would assume there's some way to use a phone or bang on the walls to signify a need to stop.
People are not generally as stupid or as desirous of dying from heat stroke as you assume.
The truly dimwitted are those who accept the constant tutelary despotism of the state because of an exaggerated fear of low probability events.
I55 is a major highway for drug trafficking into Chicago. If they were parked in an emergency lane of the on/off ramp that give the cops sufficient grounds to investigate the reason for the pullover.
Some of the “despotic” rules are necessary, Bub. You know, like stopping for stop signs or not being sold bad meat, to name a few.
