The disconnect between American blacks and Africa is profound, and it stunts their cultural development. A powerful strand of American black culture romanticizes Africa as an ancestral homeland, even though Africans themselves played an indispensable role in selling other Africans into slavery.
At the same time, many African immigrants look with disdain on the ghetto culture that developed in parts of black America during the second half of the 20th century.
And then there is the strangest irony of all: While some Africans reject that culture, others eagerly imitate it.
There’s a lot to unpack here.
The Atlantic slave trade would not have existed without African complicity. The traders—first overwhelmingly Arab and African, and later European—who bought slaves on the African coast generally did not travel deep into the continent to capture them. African rulers, armies, raiders, and traders supplied the men, women, and children sold into slavery.
(snip)
since the 1960s, a powerful strain of black activist culture in America has encouraged blacks to identify emotionally with Africa rather than with America, often imagining the continent as a repository of lost dignity and racial authenticity.
The striking thing is that many Africans do not return the compliment.
African immigrants have long looked critically at elements of American black culture. According to a recent study, written in almost impenetrable academese, many African immigrant families place enormous importance on education, family formation, work, and upward mobility. They often see America as a land of opportunity rather than oppression and deliberately distance themselves from what they see as destructive American black attitudes and behaviors.
That makes the current viral popularity of African videos mocking American ghetto culture especially interesting.

Btt!!
I have seen this personally in my travels.
He counted in his high school statistics as an African-American. It’s time to stop keeping all statistics according to race except for the few incidents where medically there are differences. The only people it helps to keep educational statistics by race are race hustlers who make their living by keeping people separated.
Educational statistics should be kept on the teachers showing how much progress individual kids make each year. What computers do best is crunch numbers. These statistics could easily tell which teachers are actually educating kids and which teachers are doing a very poor job. The latter should be counseled and offered more training. If this does not help, they should leave the profession.
They move to Africa and find out they’re really American ,LOL
They've kept in touch and both have gone on to happy marriages and careers.
“many Africans have disdain for American blacks”
...because they have eyes, ears, and a functioning brain.
American blacks don’t worship Africa. If they did, they’d go there.
I know about the blacks who are almost blue in Senegal they are called Sera. This is one of the saddest days that I can’t remember when the ambassador from Senegal said to me, we get rid of our N888888 200 years ago.
I welcome those immigrants that genuinely want to assimilate into the positive attributes of US culture.
But there are plenty of “hate the white man” Africans all over that continent. I’ll give you South Africa and Algeria as exhibits A and B.
I asked him about his wife (an black American), he said he dumped her and went home to get another wife. So I asked about the new wife - he said she was great.
“Eddie....I want to talk to yooooooooooooo!” (Language)

When I taught in Kingston a generation ago, I had a Nigerian immigrant colleague. He greatly enjoyed teaching Jamaican undergrads (as I did), despised teaching American blacks.
Booker T Washington did a lot to lift up blacks yet he’s not celebrated in their community.
At least they are naturally disposed to Cairo practice.
I had an engineering intern from St Lucia who happened to be black. He couldn’t stand all the American black entitlement and the whole diversity game forced on him at college. He found it especially funny that blacks, like himself, could only pick “African American” as his race on college forms and reports. He sneered at the question. “I’m not American and I’ve never been to African. I’m a St. Lucian.”
It's almost like having someone from Russia becoming the President of USA (he's "white" so that's close enough).
I have friends from Benign, Kenya, Nigeria, etc.
They laugh at American Blacks....While they make tons of money
Que Sera, Sera
In Senegal they will be
The future for all to see
Que Sera, Sera
A descendant of slavs, down for the struggle.
As they informed dad, "We are not his tribe."
The man was very disappointed and stayed with us a couple of days trying to sort out the experience.
Africa, and indeed most of the world, is very much a tribal society. You either are a part of the tribe, knowing all the traditions, customs and lore or you are an outsider.
I can attest to the headline.
