More than 20 people may be missing or unaccounted for after a powerful flash flood tore through part of Grand Canyon National Park, destroying footbridges, forcing evacuations and prompting officials to ask the public for help locating hikers who may have been in the area.
The flooding struck Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on Saturday, Aug. 29, around 2:30 p.m., according to the National Park Service.
On Sunday, park officials said they were working to account for people who may have been hiking, backpacking or camping in the affected areas when the flood hit.
“The National Park Service is asking the public to provide information for more than 20 individuals who may be missing or unaccounted for following a significant flash-flood event in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on August 29,” the agency said in a news release.

On the good side, that should help raise the level of Lake Mead.
From a rain that would be nothing special most places.
It’s remarkable. Even on large mesa tops flooding can be severe. There is no “soil” to begin with as we understand it. Just sand, and sandstone eroded into weird spires and alcoves, bone dry most of the time. But when it does rain, there is little absorption at all. It builds up into a raging torrent with astonishing speed.
In the slot canyons it is particularly dangerous because there might not be any rain or even clouds in the immediate area.
As I understand it, it can rain hard 100 miles away and be sunny in the Canyon which will then get an onrush of water through the lowlands and canyons.
Let’s wait to hear from the resident racial & religious bigots who mocked Tibet and Nepal for having floods just a day or two ago. Let’s see if they change their tune when it’s on their own doorstep.

Rushing flood waters are the worst.
It wasn't til the next day that I saw the reports on facebook. The other end of town got hammered. The police chief had to rescue a renter from her home after her car was swept away. I went to a pipeline safety meeting that night and the natural gas guys were talking about taking a meter reader on a boat in the river to go looking for sections of gas line and meters that had been torn away.
I’ve seen videos and they are frightening even just watching. The “water”comes fast like a wall of thick tomato soup plus logs and rocks with it.
Yep, another indication is seeing logs and brush tangled up real high, way above the normal river bank. Even if it’s just a trickle of water coursing down a dry channel get to high ground immediately.
Also the cliffs and ridge tops, normally dry become waterfalls all over the place. They are pour overs for all that water.

Friend in Vegas say they evacuate the tunnels underneath the city during the rainy season. Said you’ll see furniture spill out during large washouts.
Who was that and which posts? I didn’t see any such, tho’ I doubt I was on every FR thread about the Tibet / Nepal disaster.
all I have heard from that area is that the dam levels are falling.
must be the first day of monsoon season.
Maybe the massive el nino they talk about will refill the dam.
