New York to get first new nuclear power plant since 1988 as part of $2.2B project

New York will get its first new nuclear plant in nearly 40 years as the state grapples with soaring energy costs while scrambling to meet increased energy demands.

The new reactor would be built on the grounds of the US Army’s Fort Drum in the North Country with the goal of being fully operational within five years, officials said.

“We are building the energy resilience necessary to project combat power globally, without relying on potentially vulnerable external grids,” US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said in a statement.

The new plant — the Empire State’s first new reactor since 1988 — is part of the Army’s “Project Janus” initiative to build small reactors on military bases to generate reliable energy.

The $2.2 billion project hopes to ultimately construct 20 so-called “microreactors” nationwide. Fort Drum, home of the Army’s esteemed 10th Mountain Division, was selected along with forts in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and Georgia.

Private contractors will run the reactors, with Westinghouse awarded the Fort Drum project.

“This investment will help create a pathway towards commercially viable microreactors, with Fort Drum being one of the first recipients of this new transformative technology that can help provide much-needed baseload power,” said Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), whose district includes the fort.

The development comes as New York state is revisiting expanding nuclear energy and putting the brakes on green energy goals that some blame for sending electricity rates skyrocketing.

I give a reactor maybe a 10% chance of being built in New York. The No Nukes crowd will probable file a lawsuit against it tomorrow.

Two things you need to realize… 1. This is a micro reactor… I.e. a very small reactor that will not be lighting up any cities. 2. The entire project is a federal project conducted on a federal US Army base. How much that impacts the anti nuke commies I don’t know, but it will make their interference more difficult.

BTW… this is just one of five mini reactors the Army is purchasing from different suppliers.

In an intense war against the US then they will be the first target. You hit a nuclear power plant and you can kill a lot of people and cause a complete and unrecoverable disruption to travel and Food sources in a large area.

They wanted to put a nuke plant on the east end of LI. They built it. Never opened it.

That would be the Shorhem Nuclear Plant built by Long Island Lighting. The plant was 100% complete, fully licensed by the NRC and completely ready to produce power. But it was killed by Mario The Pious and his merry pack of left wing Luddites. These are the same people who eventually killed Indian Point, have blocked drilling for natural gas, championed useless solar fields and wind turbines, and given New York the highest priced electricity in the country. Yep… it was a great victory for the technologically ignorant and the commies who use them.

It shouldn’t have been put there. As a long islander with, at the time, knowledge of what a completely jammed Long Island expressway is like at 2-20 MPH en route to either the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge. That’s all day. And that’s just Thanksgiving. About 1/3 or less of tge population

I’m not against nuke plants. I see the value. I don’t like the risk it’s too unforgiving but i have a respected science degree. I use my scientific expertise in my career. I’m not dumb. And I’m not a cuomo loving Democrat.

That plant should never have been considered. All I expect is for tge engineers and planners to consider before putting it up
