“Shot?” or (presumably) “shot-dead?”
It’s possible some other animal got to her first, and the dog was in guard mode after chasing it off, but the chances are likely it was the problem since she was just a visitor and not a member of the household. They are supposed to be extremely loyal to their family, and she might not have been considered part of its pack. May God comfort her loved ones. Grandma is going to feel guilty for the rest of her life.
I think we can assume shot dead. No mention of how many bullets they used. They probably, as Sh. Grady would say, shot him a lot.
Unless I missed it, there is nothing in the link you provided that says anything about the breed of dog.
According to the article, the girl had previously interacted with the dog without any issues.
The article also says that the house is adjacent to the woods that have wildlife.

From the linked article…
We can’t say for certain if it was a dog, or a cougar, or bear. The property is quite far south. There’s wildlife out there. We’re unsure," .
You would think that if it was the dog that killed the girl, it would have a blood on its fur. The fact that the police are leaving open other possibilities would suggest that the dog (deceased per article) may not have been responsible.
THE STORY READS: THE FAMILY WA AGGRESSIVE, AND THEY HAD A DOG.
Recently I ended up interacting with Leftists at an alumni event. Yeah, they own pit bulls and defend them. Morons. Actuaries don’t lie, those “no pit bulls” in homeowners policies are there for good reasons.
There should be DNA in the girl’s wounds, and it should be species specific, and if it is from the dog, the individual dog’s DNA.
It is a disheartening tale, regardless.
This article mentions the Cane Corso, apparently identified as such by a neighbor. Sorry, I don’t know how to post a clickable link:

They should be exterminated with only a few living in zoos.
Not a lot to go on, but my guess would be that the same dog they killed to get to the little girl is the same animal that killed her.
