No shoes, no shirts, no teens … no problems.
A Jersey Shore beach town banned all unaccompanied minors from night activities in a citywide crackdown to stop dangerous gatherings that have led to brawls and underage drinking.
The Cape May City Council unanimously voted to implement curfews in the city, which block anyone under 18 without an adult from beach access starting at 8 p.m. and from any other public space in the city after 10:30 p.m., according to the newly passed ordinances.
“The Cape May Police Department would like to remind residents, visitors, and families about several new City ordinances designed to help keep our beaches, promenade, and community safe,” officials said Thursday.
“These ordinances are intended to help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for our residents and visitors, particularly during the busy summer season.”
The new orders set up two curfews for the adultless youngsters to thwart any rowdiness or out-of-control partying in the beach resort town.
Cape May Mayor Zachary Mullock said the ordinances are to stop troublemakers from other parts of the Jersey Shore making their way to the popular vacation hotspot after hours.
“We really wanted to make sure we didn’t become the afterparty to some of the other towns that have already made this move,” Mullock said, according to WPVI.
“After 10:30, we all know it’s not normally the best stuff that happens then, so to me, honest as a parent myself, I think there’s a good thing,” he added.

Has Cape May gone off the rails?
We took some long weekends there back in the day. Lovely place. It’s probably been 25 years or more, but the attitude was clearly all about keeping the trash out of town and well up the coast.
It’s easy to ruin a place if the wrong people get elected.
“It is a defense move so the felons don’t move to CM from the other northern beaches.”
I agree, but getting the public to oversee their youth when they get to mid teens on is like pulling teeth. History in many locations has shown that parents do not do a good job with this age group and the liberal government is always quick to step in and create conflict many times worse than the original problem. (Remember what Reagan said about government) It’s all about the stubborness and the lack of responsibility of people. There will be enough pushback to create a problem. And challenging the public with mandates like this is going to raise a lot of challenges back.
