Kansas students have been forced to put cell phones into lockers before they set foot in class as part of a blanket ban on the devices in schools across the state.
Thousands of students in grades K-12 are banned from using their cell phones during the school day under HB 2299, which outgoing Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed into law in March and hailed as a tool to “reduce distractions in the classroom.”
School districts are granted the flexibility to enforce the policy as they see fit.
Schools in the Kansas City public school district have spent $150,000 on special lockers for students to slot in their cell phones before class, KCTV reported.
Video has since gone viral showing kids at Wyandotte High School putting their cell phones into a cage with a glass window as a supervisor seemingly provides oversight of the high-tech gadgets at the start of the school day at 7:25 a.m.
The cell phone cage cannot be accessed during school hours and students are required to collect their device at the end of the school day at 2:25 p.m.

Taking cell phones out of student’s hands during school is a marvelous idea! I am sure these students will begin to learn something.

In other words, the law has no teeth. The kids will cry, parents will complain, and the districts will cave.
Make each classroom a faraday cage. The only phone that works is the rotary phone in the office
The poor students may have to live like it’s the 1980’s..
I don’t like this, because some students have fast hands and grab the better phone when the case is open.
I’d really rather that cell phones be banned, so that students can focus on their studies for 8 hours/day.
The educators I know here in Texas say it made a huge difference in attention and test scores.

Why wasn’t it always like this?

I help run a youth outdoor adventure program. We don’t allow phones on campouts.
My answer is “You call me. I need to know about it and can tell Johnnie.”
I once had to deliver a family death notification on a campout to a young man. I couldn’t imagine how that could have gone sideways had mom called him and we were unaware of it.
I also received a call from a mom when she found out her son was expressing suicidal ideations a few days before our camp.
When she called me he was at our riflery area. We called up on the radio and declared an immediate cease fire, sent someone to get him off the range. After an evaluation at a local hospital, it turned out to be nothing critical, but if he had actually been suicidal and mom called him while he was holding a loaded rifle, who knows what could have happened.
Only our esteemed and ever so important public school teachers would take 20 years to figure out that this was necessary.
Not interested student sob stories or parents’ libertarian counter-arguments.
Rich ones, too.
Every state should have this rule.
A Faraday cage at the scale of a school would be extremely expensive. It is sensible to just prohibit the devices in the classrooms.
Teachers aren’t usually the problem. The problem is the parents who make demands of the school. Many parents sue the schools in order to get their way. Most of the crap that goes on in schools is a result of parental lawsuits or anticipation of them.
Sure will. I fought those stupid things in my classroom. Suceeded, but students HATED me.
