A ticket sold in Illinois matched all six winning numbers in Wednesday's Powerball drawing to claim the $1.040 billion jackpot.
The grand prize has an estimated cash value of $450.5 million and ranks as the eighth-largest Powerball jackpot ever won, according to Powerball.
The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was won on Nov. 7, 2022, when a ticket sold in California claimed a $2.04 billion Powerball prize. A $1.817 billion Powerball jackpot won on Christmas Eve ranks as the second-largest prize in U.S. lottery history.

The media celebrates winners of government-run numbers rackets that are frauds. We need to abolish them as we've learned education lotteries are raising the cost of education, and nobody wants to speak truth about it, they spin the "state gambling is good" and expanding it to sports betting and horse racing, despite the major Operation Nothing But Net scam involving Chinese basketball at a Philadelphia casino.
The state as bookie is destroying people.
how is the state destroying anybody re: the lottery? No one forced you to buy a ticket.
So his net return is ~$258 million? I mean, yeah, that's still huge. But what the state takes from it, and what they already made from the millions of tickets they sold. Reminds me of the movies about when the mafia owned vegas before our demonic SCOTUS declared injuns having the right to have a monopoly on casinos.
The same way casinos destroy people. No one is required to gamble at casinos either.
Always IL, CA ... sometimes NY and FL.
stars ... is this YOU???
“The state as bookie is destroying people.”
I was 15 when the NYS lottery was started up back in 1966. I remember even then as a kid the endless debates about it being a regressive tax, tax on the poor, etc. Liberals said “But it’s for education!”
In the end, on balance, all these lotteries and legalized gambling are horrible for society. We were much better off before state lotteries and, if you wanted to gamble, you went to Vegas or Reno and that was it. And you had to go to the same places if you wanted a divorce.
There are SO many forces tearing the nation apart.
NY UNDERSTANDING: FED TAXES ARE TAKEN-—APPROX 40%
WIN $100 MILLION-—NET TAKE===$60 MILLION.
And now sports betting is making it much worse.
There is no way all those lottery sales do not provide avenues of interaction for bigger government, increased corruption of elected officials, and organized crime.
It’s like putting trannies in women’s bathrooms and expecting them to abide by a common sense of decency.
Lot of fun.
Awesome winning.
But really not a billionaire.
Jackpot ............. $1,040,000,000.00
Payout .............. $450,500,000.00
Fed Tax (37.5%) $16,893,750.00
IL Tax (4.95%) . $22,299,750.00
Winning ............ $411,306,500.00
I'm finding it more and more difficult to actually watch any sports these days due to that advertising.
Yes. Even worse, there are betting markets now for FOREST FIRES!! The bastards can make bets, set fires, and win money. Unbelievable. The whole world is on fire.
jb? did pritzker get the ticket?
$450,000,000. Not $450,000.
Looks like you were off a decimal place in the Fed Tax line.
Oh the horror. LOL
Yeah, but most people would read the whole post and see the $258 million net and know it’s a typo. Most people.
Oh, you had the neighborhood bookies w ho took bets on the numbers, and the cops used to pretend to arrest them. And those bookies only had one number a day while these state lotteries have 5 or 6 numbers a day plus scratch off tickets and multi-million dollar advertising budgets.
About ten years ago Illinois refused to pay for lottery winnings that were on multi-year payouts. Take what you can immediately and escape the state.
You’re right.
Looks like I need to get to Costa Rica quicker than I thought.
