John Goodman is giving fans a closer look at his dramatic transformation after losing more than 200 pounds.
The 74-year-old actor recently appeared in an Instagram selfie with Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place star David DeLuise, who happened to run into Goodman while at a supermarket. The photo quickly caught attention, with Goodman looking noticeably different from the actor fans remember from his years playing Dan Conner on ABC's Roseanne.
Goodman starred as the lovable but complicated family patriarch throughout the sitcom’s original run from 1988 to 1997. His character’s weight was often referenced on the show, but Goodman later revealed that his own weight had climbed as high as 400 pounds.
Goodman had struggled with alcoholism for decades and eventually entered rehab, later describing the decision as a turning point in his life.

Alcoholism is a terrible addiction.
Amazing that he was able to quit. Many cannot.
He is a good actor but his previous face and body were very useful for his onscreen presence.
OTOH, he’d probably be dead by now if he hadn’t changed.

Now, he looks like an old leather boot, with a grey cast to the skin. Some of that may be leftover stretched out skin.
Good for John, that he has kept that weight off for about the last 2 years, but his face looked healthier before.
Well he may be unrecognizable but he’s recognizably good looking for his age.

Who cares if he is unrecognizable? And these articles that suggest that he is no longer marketable because of the weight loss are horrible. Maybe its true. But by his own account he topped out around 400 pounds and was addicted to alcohol. He’d be dead if he did not get his weight and drinking under control. He should be celebrated, not criticized or have hand-wringing articles written about how he’s not going to get roles because he isn’t fat.
Quite so. Goodman deserves credit for winning a hard struggle.

Lose the weight fast the skin gets saggy.
Lose the weight slow the skin may keep up.
Seen both.
He damn sure looks Good.
He had thinned out a lot during “The Connors”. Of course that kind of weight loss is going to change his appearance, but being 74 years old is too.

I agree. In terms of his face, he looks like a normal man in his 70s. Most people who experience extreme weight loss get some type of skin surgery - its medically necessary and is not done for vanity. But I’m glad that he did not go the extra step of vanity surgery on top of it like a face lift, etc. As you said, he looks really good. Sure looks better than being in a coffin, which he likely would be if he was still 400 pounds and drinking heavily.
