(WJAR) — Rhode Island U.S. Attorney’s Office said a former Rhode Island Department of Human Services supervisor pleaded guilty in a scheme to defraud the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
According to federal prosecutors, 59-year-old Nadine Jean Baptiste used her position to improperly access and exploit the personal information and benefits of SNAP recipients.
On Tuesday, officials said Jean Baptiste admitted to accessing SNAP EBT card information, conducting unauthorized telephone balance inquiries, and altering PINs associated with those cards.
Those impacted by this scheme included juveniles, homeless individuals, or people that were incarcerated at the time their information was accessed, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Federal prosecutors did not immediately say when she will be sentenced.
According to officials, the investigation began in September 2023 when the internal audit office received multiple complaints from people who reported they never received the EBT cards issued to them.
