With thousands murdered and more imprisoned and tortured I can understand the reluctance .
Someone mentioned the US war against the Brits. We did that with next to NO resources, experience, no kind of a military or navy to speak of...and no allies (until nearly the end).
Any 'colonial' caught opposing the crown was sure to be hanged or at the least would lose everything he owned or ever would! His fortune, family and future were all at risk.
