I used to have a 4-cyl, 2-door Ranger and it was good for most needs, but every now and then wished it had a back seat for groceries while I had a kid in the passenger seat. After I drove it to the ground I had a cargo cab version and it was the best (and had a much larger bed than the small ones like pictured here). But that was good for the time because back then I didn't carry a lot of heavy loads for long distances. Now that my kids are grown and moved out and I'm quasi-retired, I find myself volunteering carrying large loads for the family and the church. So my larger (and gas powered, not EV LOL) pickup meets todays needs better than one of my old Rangers would have.
When I was young and had a small pickup, if small EV pickups had been a thing then I might have gotten one. I drove tons of miles going to work full time for 5 days per week, while going to college the other two days per week. I didn't carry large cargo for long trips (I didn't need a large gas pickup). But I did every now and then between college quarters make extra cash with my small pickup throwing lawn mowing equipment in the back. All while living at home (where an EV charger could be set up) for 8 years. A somewhat cheap EV pickup like this would have been ideal for saving me tons of gas on my 7 days per week commute, but giving me a pickup bed for every now and then dirty small job chores.
I have an old 4runner and with the rear seats down and a trailer hitch cargo rack and passenger seat forward I could comfortably haul 12 foot long lumber. In a pinch, I could haul 16 foot lumber. It would have been harder to do in a Tacoma because the back of the cab was fixed.
I also have a very old, long bed pickup that gets 10 miles a gallon. The only advantage it has is I can haul bulk goods but still a limited amount and plywood and sheet rock flat. It would probably make sense to sell the pickup and just pull a trailer behind the 4runner but there is a charm driving a truck with drum brakes and side window wings that is long gone and not coming back.
