A statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s older brother, has been unveiled at the old Entebbe Airport terminal where he was killed leading an elite IDF force in the rescue of hostages in 1976.

“It is a great honor and privilege to join you at this historic site as we unveil this monument to Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan ‘Yoni’ Netanyahu, the courageous commander of the Israeli rescue force whose leadership and ultimate sacrifice during the Entebbe raid of July 4, 1976, has become an enduring symbol of courage, duty and selfless service,” said Uganda’s military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at the ceremony, the Kampala Post reported Saturday.

Kainerugaba also named those killed throughout the hostage taking, including Jean-Jacques Maimoni, Pasco Cohen, Ida Borochovitch and Dora Bloch.

“As we gather here, we also respectfully remember the innocent hostages who lost their lives during those tragic events,”

Uganda is overwhelmingly Christian.

Uganda has been doing fine in terms of economic development.

To be sure, Uganda is still classified as low income by the world bank; and could use some improvement in terms of economic freedom and its Freedom House rating.

There is an interesting aspect of Uganda’s economic collapse and partial recovery. Amin scapegoated and then expelled the Asian merchants who held key positions in Uganda’s economy when he took power. The economy promptly collapsed - cut by 50% by some measures. When Amin was overthrown, later presidents tried to get the Asian merchant class to return with mixed success but their return really helped get the economy back on track.

“”Initiating the operation at nightfall on 3 July 1976, Israeli transport planes flew 100 commandos over 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) to Uganda. During the assault, the commandos rescued 102 hostages and killed all the hijackers alongside 45 Ugandan soldiers, while destroying 11 Ugandan fighter jets.[6][3] Three hostages died during the raid, and a fourth—Dora Bloch, who had been taken to a Kampala hospital prior to the rescue—was subsequently murdered by Ugandan authorities. Sayeret Matkal unit commander Yonatan Netanyahu was the sole Israeli military fatality, alongside five wounded commandos.[8]””

I remember when it happened but not the particulars so looked it up...so many hijackings took place around that time..

Twenty-four years ago, I beFRiended a retired IDF Special Forces Major who knew Bibi and Yoni and participated in that raid.

He was very likeable, but ALL business; going FRom E-1 to O-4 in the IDF is quite an achievement.

He was close-mouthed about Entebbe, but he told me enough so that I knew he was being truthful.

He died way too young; RIP Lee.
