Whenever I think back to my childhood, everything seems fairly joyful and innocent. And then, one day, my mother told me that I once got locked in a bathroom with a bucket full of water as a kid. That was scary, but thankfully, nothing happened.

We also whacked those rolls with a hammer. The pleasures of youth are many.
“I once looked at lead paint on a window sill for over 5 minutes.”
as long as you didn’t inhale, you’ll probably be all right ...
My dad bought me a 22LR when I was 8 years old for Christmas.
I had a blast with it.
Kept it in my closet with a lot of ammo.
Still have it.
Mossberg 342 KA. Bolt action with a folding forestock.
Once my Best Friend and I made a raft and after a heavy storm went down the surging local creek. It was a thrilling white water ride—we survived by the skin of our teeth. Looking back we could have been killed.
A buddy of mine and I jumped off my parents roof with open umbrellas expecting the result you would see in the cartoons.
Didn’t work out that way.
Another trip to the emergency room.
If my mother thought back on things she allowed me to do that were dangerous, being around a bucket of water wouldn’t be one of them. That’s something that wouldn’t even register enough to be a memory.
Mom did say one time that she couldn’t believe she allowed all of us to ride in the back of the pick-up truck while trusting the 8 year old to keep the two year old from failing out.
I once discovered that if you broke the “good stuff” off of sparklers, ground it up and lit it, it made a nice flare.
Well, in 7th grade, we studied volcanoes in my social studies class, and as a project, I made a volcano out of clay and put ground sparkler material in the crater at the top.
So, I brought my project to school to be displayed with other kids’ creations, along with a little bottle of fuel that the teacher wisely took charge of.
When the time came, they actually allowed me to demonstrate it, with the principal standing guard at the back of the room. It was a huge hit with the kids, and I got an “A” for the project.
One slight problem.
Not long after, there was a fire in the same room where the demonstration took place. I knew it wasn’t my fault as the fuel was totally consumed and I had already taken my project home, but word was that I was considered as the cause of the conflagration.
It turns out that what was then called a “juvenile delinquent” was actually to blame, a guy who not many years later spent some serious time in jail for rape and God knows what else. I went on to a career as an engineer, and he was a career criminal.
I don’t know what discussions took place in the background, but I only know that I lucked out.
Wow. I had no idea that even pre-birth trauma can influence one’s later life in a negative way…
In the 1960s my older sister had four kids under six years old.
One time when we were visiting, she asked me if I had a tweezer with me.
My nieces and nephews had ruined all of hers in the electrical sockets.
I still do that! Haven’t even gotten a tummy ache.
I assumed there were more old timers here than just myself - we didn’t even have a bathroom to get locked into!! Ours was a few steps OUTSIDE the house - QUITE a few in fact...guess that’s why it became known as the “outhouse”....As a little kid, I was fond of throwing my shoes down...wondering how far down they would go, I guess. Probably after once or twice of that, my folks took my shoes away..I would have if it had been my child - maybe that’s why we went barefoot all summer. I fell through the ice pond one year when my brother was ice skating...he dragged me out and raced to the house with me on the sled...In spite of it all - GREAT memories....I can’t be the only one here who grew up on a farm....
Great tip!
We 60s kids were pre big wheels
Banana seat bikes came maybe 68/69
But we had guns lol
LOL - the best yet.....
Does REM therapy work?
😂😂😂
That was utterly hilarious.
I wish I had 1% of this gentleman‘s wit…
"And that's the way it was and we liked it!"
I can imagine that stubborn farm animals or accidents with farm equipment posed much more danger, yes, but even the children of „city slickers“ could easily get into some trouble.
You can still get the cyclamates sweetened soft drinks in Europe. The US ban was financially motivated rather than scientifically motivated.
Back in olden times (pre Covid and Global Warming) folks were gullible enough to trust scientists. Folks still aren’t ready to talk about the health benefits of cigarettes.
