27 Adults Revealed The Childhood Moments They Thought Were Normal, But Realized Years Later They Were Actually Dangerous
Buzzfeed ^

Whenever I think back to my childhood, everything seems fairly joyful and innocent. And then, one day, my mother told me that I once got locked in a bathroom with a bucket full of water as a kid. That was scary, but thankfully, nothing happened.

Wow!

Unfortunately, Tanishtha doesn't go into more detail about this bathroom incident. Perhaps she is withholding that detail for a separate, feature piece.

So many questions come to mind: How long was she locked in the bathroom? Was this a public or private bathroom? Who was responsible for watching her at the time? And, most importantly, what is this bucket of water all about? Was the bucket large enough, and she small enough, to have actually fallen in the bucket at the time?

The author's experience does flow naturally into the horror experiences she cites, which can range anywhere from falling through ice on a river to being prank called.

My second career was teaching technical subjects in high school; I loved it.

I told the students about the time when I was a bit younger than they were and fell out of a 200 foot tall tree without getting hurt.

They expressed a lack of trust in me, so I finally told ‘em I was only 2 feet up in the tree.

Hell, I wasn’t stupid.

“And then, one day, my mother told me that I once got locked in a bathroom with a bucket full of water as a kid.” Very strange story.

I once looked at lead paint on a window sill for over 5 minutes.

It was called the “60’s and 70’s”. Pretty much everything we did.

I once sprayed paint right out of the can into my eyes while trying to clear a clog. I never did that again. I think I was around 10 at the time.

So much fun! I remember the "clacker" toys where you slammed glass balls together on strings, Whamo! toys that were out to kill you, and running barefoot everywhere in the summer.

Buzzfeed is about as woke as it gets - bashing Donald Trump is one of their Prime Directives. A lot of their threads are copied right off of Reddit, including this one.

July, 2026:

“BuzzFeed recently laid off approximately 180 employees, representing roughly 35% of its workforce, in a major restructuring announced on July 27, 2026.

The layoffs are part of an effort to stem millions of dollars in annual losses and achieve profitability.

This follows previous significant cuts, including the shutdown of BuzzFeed News in April 2023, where 15% of staff (about 180 employees) were laid off as the unit ceased operations. The digital media company has faced persistent financial challenges, including a nearly 20% year-over-year decline in advertising revenue and widening net losses.”

I (still) have a friend who as a kid hit a 22 round with a hammer trying to do something or other, and the bullet hit him in the knee, luckily he didn’t have to tell his parents but he shared his secret with me in Junior High.

I once asked my father for 20 bucks. He said, “10 Bucks, what do you need 5 dollars for?”

Clark Griswold: Eddie, has anyone ever told you you’re bad luck?

Cousin Eddie: Those were my mother’s dying words. But I guess if your body’s covered in third degree burns, and your foot’s caught in a bear trap, you tend to start talkin’ crazy.

My parents used to tell me when I was a kid (probably 6-7 years old) that if I was bad they were going to throw me away in the garbage.

One day I was in the alley behind my house in the city and started climbing a tree (my parents worked different shifts, so I was not frequently supervised). I slipped and fell into one of the 50 gallon oil drums that was the standard for garbage in alleys at the time. Realizing I was in the garbage can (which was taller than me at the point) I got hysterical and started screaming “don’t throw me away with the garbage”.

It was not the kind of childhood you think about with sweet nostalgia.

I was busy in the backyard playing with matches or rafting around on Pottsburg creek in a rickety raft we nailed together and gators all over the place.

Bucket of water seems pretty tame. 😉

My uncle was welding some repairs on the farm and told me not to watch him. I went around the side of the barn, peeked at him anyway, and flash burned my eyes. It subsided by the next day but I was miserable for that afternoon and night.

Latch-key lunatics. We figured stuff out. What happened on kud time, stayed as kid time. Our local pharmacist at the drug store used to be our go-to for patching us up, bandages, butterfly strips, Bactine, and he never said a word. Kid code was to never let your parents find out you got hurt. Occasionally a hospital ER visit was needed and we would all suffer. The parents would just “ground you” for a week or so.
