Without ANY question it's the hubris, conceit, and arrogance of the regime that is guiding their reactions. They believe they are holier and better than the rest of us. That's how they can justify to themselves that it's acceptable to kill their own citizens. That's how they can delude themselves into thinking that God wants them to act this way.

IMHO, in addition to militarily defeating them, it's also important to take away their self-righteousness and to defeat them ideologically - pointing out the incongruence of their actions and positions to the concept of God as loving, merciful, and forgiving.
