A friend’s son has a job for a company, in which he just pursues theoretical geometry, in whatever direction he wants to go. Just recently he won a Fields medal (which I never heard of but sounds impressive) for a solution he arrived at in college.
I’d suggest you give the movie Good Will Hunting a watch to learn the significance of the Fields medal ;)
