US intelligence: Mojtaba Khamenei more open to build nuclear bomb

US intelligence briefings cited by The New York Times on Friday indicate that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, displays a far greater willingness to build nuclear weaponry than his father who preceded him.

His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in joint US-Israeli airstrikes during the opening phase of the war, had maintained a long-standing fatwa (religious decree) against weaponization. While American analysts previously maintained that Tehran sought the threshold capacity to assemble a device, many considered the former leader's religious reluctance genuine.

The younger Khamenei has avoided explicit public calls for a nuclear arsenal, noted The New York Times. Nevertheless, intelligence agencies assess that he and the hardline leadership that took power following the deaths of key Iranian figures harbour ambitions to produce sophisticated nuclear warheads.

The current administration in Tehran has already asserted stricter dominance over the Strait of Hormuz and proved unyielding at the negotiating table. Should the military campaign ultimately push Iran closer to building a bomb, it would represent a severe unintended consequence of the targeting of top leadership and the administration's early regime-change goals.

There are some very good people at the NYT, but when you have an ideology-driven enterprise, thus blinded to truth and reality, those good people become either cannon fodder or just waste away in the non-meritocracy that is the liberal hierarchy.

Well, of course he would. When a weaker nation is attacked by a stronger one, the weaker nation has two options going forward:

A. Choose peace, and just try to stay out of trouble (the Switzerland approach).

B. Arm up to dissuade another such attack.

And Muslims aren’t particularly noted for taking a peaceful option.

Please, name a couple… their janitors are, without a doubt, decent people. Others, not so much…

If Mojtaba’s daddy was so headset against dev3opling a bomb, why do they have so much 60% enriched uranium?

“US intelligence briefings cited by The New York Times”

NY Times making it up OR leaks. Take your pick.

Anyone could have guessed this. Israel took out his father and almost killed him (assuming Mo is still alive). You think maybe Mo is pissed and out for revenge?

Mike from Breaking Bad is right. Given where we are now ... half measures are not enough in Iran if the goal is to really deal with the nuke & strait issues.

With North Korea and Pakistan around and nuclear armed, I would think they’d simply buy them.

The current administration in Tehran has already asserted stricter dominance
over the critical Strait of Hormuz, and proved unyielding at the negotiating table.

Should the military campaign ultimately push Iran closer to building a bomb, it would represent a severe unintended consequence of Israel stupidly targeting top leadership and hoodwinking the Trump administration into its idiotic regime-change goals.

“US intelligence briefings [ANONYMOUSLY]cited by The New York Times on Friday indicate that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, displays a far greater willingness to build nuclear weaponry than his father who preceded him”

btw, given Iran’s hell-bent all-out effort for decades on building an atomic bomb, i don’t how it’s possible for the new Ayatollah to display a far greater willingness to build one, unless you account him being desirous of having his entire country bombed back into the stone age as “willingness” ...

We spent over 100 billion dollars and american lives to replace one Khamenei with another Khamenei 30 years younger with an even bigger grudge.
