Tensions are rising between Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and President Trump over the Senate GOP’s inability to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act or emergency funding for the Pentagon at a critical moment during Trump’s second term.
At a rally in Marietta, Ga., on Wednesday, Trump fumed at the Senate’s failure to advance his agenda, telling a crowd: “We’re having a hard time in the Senate. … It’s like the Senate is a place you send things when you want them to die.”
Then on Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump’s “patience is running out” with Thune as he struggles to move the president’s agenda through the Senate.
“The Senate needs to do its job,” she warned.
That criticism didn’t sit well with Thune, who appeared annoyed when a reporter asked about the press secretary’s comments.
“Maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes. Right? It’s 50 around here,” Thune shot back.
“Instead of pointing the finger at Republicans, they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats,” Thune added. “And if there are Republicans they think are gettable, get on the phone.”
Thune’s allies rushed to his defense and criticized the White House for undercutting the Senate GOP leader publicly.
“I have 1000 percent confidence in Thune, and anybody in the White House who thinks he’s not a good leader isn’t qualified for their job,” Republican Sen. Thom Tillis (N.C.) declared in response to the White House criticism.
Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine) — who voted against the SAVE America Act when the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) offered it as an amendment to a budget reconciliation also defended Thune.

“stalled Trump agenda”
How about “stalled agenda which is our last chance to save the Republic”?
“Look who is defending him in this article. Says a lot.”
No kidding. Tillis and Collins mentioned, but where’s Murkowski? Where’s John Curtis (R-Utah)?
There is absolutely NO excuse for not passing this legislation, especially considering what massive fraud has come to light in NJ. Thune knows this.
Thune has no common sense or shame
That would probably require the cooperation of a lot of senate Democrats, and they know that Thune is a better asset to them.
5 GOP Senators move to debate new majority leader. Then a majority of GOP Senators vote to replace him. So 27 GOP Senators hold the power to replace him. Get er done.
It seems as if he’s corrupt or compromised.
This puke is a soldier for the Deep State. Paul Ryan is probably his handler.
or his Hate for Trump overrides everything
Replacing him won’t change the math.
NC hasn’t had a US Senator worth spit since Jesse Helms.
Thune apparently can’t arm-twist like Speaker. and to even think about going out for a long August recess- on top of their excessive recesses this year - preposterous. i see Thune’s country club tan from same and my blood boils.
IF the dims want something passed they get it done. They don’t care about polls or such....they simply get it done.
Worthless thune,has always been a rino.NFG
One of McConnell’s ass wipers !
Thune ranks with Iran as an enemy of the people. Consider his allies.
Thanks hero. The can’t caucus has chimed in.
Thune is a traitor...along with many of his co-looters
Thune appears incompetent. I’m holding my breath but he doesn’t seem up to the job — ?
