Spain star says he will reluctantly shake US President Donald Trump's hand at World Cup final: 'I don't want to go to prison'

Spain striker Borja Iglesias has conceded he will reluctantly shake Donald Trump's hand at the World Cup final because he 'doesn't want to go to prison'.

The United States president will be on hand at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to hand the Jules Rimet trophy to the winners on Sunday, with Spain taking on defending champions Argentina.

It's possible, though, that Trump will meet players from both sides, and that's put Iglesias on edge.

The 33-year-old has regularly made his political views clear, and spoke out during the controversy surrounding former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation boss Luis Rubiales, who was convicted of sexual assault after forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso following the 2023 Women's World Cup final.

Iglesias, who plays for Celta Vigo in his homeland, has also previously backed pro-Palestine protesters, painted his fingernails black in support of Black Lives Matter and has regularly spoken out against homophobia.

Now, he faces the prospect of meeting Trump - something he doesn't seem keen to do.

'I don't want to go to prison,' Iglesias told a local magazine at the prospect. 'I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy, and that it passes very quickly and I can forget about it.

'I don't think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think. I would love to do many things, but the reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don't have that much power to tackle certain things.'

Having scored 18 goals this season for Celta Vigo, Iglesias has made three appearances at the World Cup, totalling 73 minutes as a back-up striker.

The behavior of the left in their civil war and their extraction blended with forced catholic conversion of the natives says plenty about Spain

They did boot the Muslims though to their credit

I think you’re conflating him with John Hinkley, who shot Reagan to impress Jodie Foster. I don’t recall why Chapman said he shot Lennon

Other than fooootball and all-night raves, what has Spain contributed to modern society?

Yesterday's England v France game (for 3rd place) was such an amazing, high-scoring barn burner. England won, 6-4 and good on them.

I have much less interest in the today's final, Argentina vs the team that I now wouldn't mind if it loses in an embarrassing fashion (so many of the teams from other countries displayed soooo much more class and respect).

I won't watch or waste precious DVD space for the match.

By golly, you’re right about Hinckley. Foster was mentioned in some of the articles about Chapman. But it was Hinckley who was totally obsessed with Foster.

I think I got the two murderers mixed up.

Yesterday’s game was the soccer equivalent of a Harlem Globetrotters game.

Entertaining, but it wasn’t soccer.

What I don’t understand about Spain, is they’re super-leftists, yet simply adore their Franco-installed royal family.

I don’t really recall what Chapman’s motive was.

Trump should snub him.

Well who’s to say? She might have still been impressed.

So he doesn’t have the guts to stand up for his beliefs? If Hitler stood before me, I wouldn’t shake his hand. But, he’s doesn’t really feel that way.. he’s just acting like a worm to gain the affection of other worms.

That was my first thought as well. Lots of crazy people out there. Recall Mark Chapman, who shot John Lennon. He did it for a number of muddled reasons, one of which was to impress actress Jodie Foster.

When we heard he wanted to impress a lesbian, good grief.

What group expresses opinions that are more stupid? Hollywood actors, Democrat politicians, or soccer players?

I don’t think so. That was Hinckley.

You're right.

Hinckley believed that the attack would impress the actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had a fixation after watching her in Martin Scorsese's 1976 film Taxi Driver.

Hope Argentina kicks their ass.

I have no horse in this race, but I'm with you.

But to be totally honest, I don't give a fat rat's ass.
