The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just announced another air bag recall. This time, tens of millions of vehicles are under a Do Not Drive warning because the bags are not operating as designed.

How many 20+ year-old vehicles are still on the road these days anyway. The years affected are 2003-2006.

I would guess a large number! With the increase in new car prices and the unwanted “enhancements” on newer models, many older folks opt for simpler times with mostly reliable cars that dont have heads up display or navigation or adaptive cruise control. I have a 26 year old Jaguar with 48K miles on it, and I finally had to sell my 2004 Acura with 286K miles because of an unacceptably high estimate to fix the multiple oil leaks from the engine. A mechanic bought the Acura, repaired it and is using it regularly! My newest car is a 2022 Jeep for long distance trips; it only has 31K miles on it!

Incidentally, one of my favorite cars was a 2002 4 Runner bought on ebay in Tampa! She was a beauty, and was finally replaced by my 2022 Jeep.Tough, rugged and dependable! We were in Tanzania for a Safari early this year, and were delighted to see that most of the vehicles were Toyotas, of which many were 4Runners!

The recall goes up to some 2015 vehicles.

Lots of older vehicles are now sitting on used car dealer lots, to be sold to folks looking for cheap transportation.

Maybe to a kid for his first car.

Do used car dealers check VIN numbers for safety recalls?
Eh, who knows?

So as usual, better do your own due diligence.

Thanks for posting that NHTSA link, and so quickly.
👍

I had the link in my post #1, but it disappeared for some reason.

I am getting close with a 2010 and not in any rush to buy an overpriced underpowered over enhanced new POS. 76K miles, 6cyl 300+hp no turbo. At my age, my next vehicle will be a gurney.

At least my 2004 Mazda RX8 does not have this recall. I took care of that years ago in the first Takata recall.

However, I just discovered that my RX8 has two other critical recalls that have only been PARTIALLY resolved, when I thought they had already been taken care of.

There is a potential leak in the gas line under the rear seat and a lower control arm ball joint housing that could break under load. I put the front suspension under load lots of times.

Perhaps I should pay a visit to the nearest dealer.

This seems to only impact Hyundai and Chevy, at first glance.

It connects to older recalls, but we already had those “done.”

Just go here and let it tell you:

Yeah, those are the old recall. We have two cars on that “list” and I just checked them and they are not in scope.
