Truman had rejected the resettlement of all the displaced Jews after the U.S. and the allies had just rescued them from certain extinction - another fine example of "caring, compassionate and inclusive" Democrat hypocrisy that led to the 1965 Act's passage with little opposition.
I personally believe that Epstein was actively compromising and recording influential Americans to collect potential leverage for the Israeli government - a solid "Never Again" insurance policy to guarantee the Jewish people would never be left out in the cold again. It's the only explanation that makes sense out of that affair and all the effort expended to bury it.
