This has nothing to do with the usual social media ills; the Taliban is not worried about people chasing after likes on Reddit.
Taliban wants smartphones gone so nobody can record and post real-time or rapid proof of the atrocities they intend to commit.
Afghanistan was a philosophically misguided military intervention.
It was necessary, to eliminate the threat from there, to bring OBL to justice for what he did to 3,800 Americans.
BUT the idea of “nation building” was idiotic.
With places like that, if you see a threat, you launch missiles or bomb them from the air, occasionally have little green men land and shoot the place up and then leave. You keep your ears to the rail with HUMINT (we allowed those channels to die after the Cold War ended - big mistake), keep an eye on them with SIGNIT and IMINT, but you do not build bases with permanent party troops and try to teach them about democracy, western values, bla bla bla.
We were trying to bring 1,000 years of Western cultural advancement (enlightenment and all) into Afghanistan in a few years and while doing that over turn the entire power structures of that society.
That's obviously NOT going to work. But there were many in the West (most of these ideas have died off) that believed there is some universal understanding of fairness, that all people seek what we define as human rights (to include our LGBTQIA lunacy) and democracy, which of course is bogus.
