Tetanus is a rare but dangerous disease. A doctor explains why experts are worried

Tetanus may sound like a disease from another era, but experts are warning that it remains a serious threat.

Two recent reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found hundreds of tetanus cases and dozens of deaths over 15 years, along with four cases in children in 2024 alone. At the same time, vaccination rates have declined, worrying experts that more people could become vulnerable to this potentially deadly but preventable infection.

To help us understand what tetanus is, why it remains dangerous and how people can protect themselves, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen. Wen is an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University. She previously served as Baltimore’s health commissioner.

The rusty nail was in the yard and had been for years.

I did a lot of reprocessing studies on medical instruments and always checked for rust because it can trap bacteria easily making for sterilization failures.

It’s not the rust itself but the surface texture of rust that allows bacteria to “hide”.

AFAIK, there is no standalone tetanus shot. It’s a DPT booster.

I got a tetanus shot sometime in 2025. I have to admit the VA does a good job keeping track of when you need various shots. I think it should be done for all Medical companies.

Unless you are the 2-3 deaths, I’d get the shot. Heck you may save your family grieving for a few decades.

The only tetanus shots I ever got was after stepping on a nail as a kid, and after cutting my finger on a carpet tack while cleaning up after Katrina savaged us.

You only get Tetanus from a puncture or deep wound. If you get one of those, go to the minor emergency and get a shot. That’s what we have been doing for 30+ years.

Apparently they want to pump up the tetanus sales.

Don’t be afraid of Tetanus, be afraid of rabies.

Oh, and BTW, the reservoir of tetanus is horses....if you are around any land where horses have been, then be very vigilant if you get an ingury and get the shot (after the fact).

For the last time, Tetanus does NOT come from rust!

Correct. I had gotten a tetanus shot after getting cut by a rusty nail during a home rehab. The house was from 1890, and in an urban area. There may have been horse hair mixed in with the plaster, but I was in no real danger from a rusty nail in a 100 year old frame. No harm done, though.

“the reservoir of tetanus is horses...

The reservoir is the soil. You cannot get tetanus from a horse.

True. The danger comes not from the nail, it comes from bacteria, primarily soil related.

“Why do we need a Tetanus shot when we have antibiotics?”

Enjoy your regimen of 500 mg intravenously (IV) every six to eight hours for 10 to 14 days.

Make sure to get your COVID Jabs and boosters every 3-6 months. It’s the only thing that can save you (and Social Security/Medicare). 😢
