The prime minister and foreign secretary were involved in arguing for the kick-off time for England's World Cup match against Mexico not to be moved earlier - as mooted by Fifa in the days before the game.
Sir Keir Starmer instructed officials to make the case, backed by the Football Association, that the match should remain in its original time slot, as first reported by the Sun newspaper.
Yvette Cooper spoke to the British ambassador to Mexico, to ask that British diplomats made representations against a change, to ensure that the 3,000 travelling England fans didn't miss the match as a result.
Fifa had been set to bring the match forward by six hours, due to a forecast of thunderstorms.
In the end, Fifa stuck to the scheduled start time, but kick-off was then delayed by an hour because of the weather.
Speaking at a Downing Street reception, Sir Keir said: "We had to battle with the FA to get it back to where it was, which was counterintuitive."
The Football Association has not commented.

So, the PM of England interferes with all things FIFA, no one bats an eye. Our beloved President Trump asks politely for a review, morons go berserk!
I am surprised Starmer would be interested in any team that is not from a moslem country. Oh, wait, never mind, he has helped make the UK a moslem country.
Keir Starmer’s a wanker. Come arrest me.
If any fans were flying directly in for the game, that’s actually a reasonable request. A rain delay is one thing. Rolling with the weather is something everyone understands (although soccer is still a manly game that is played in inclement conditions, lightning being an exception.)
Advancing a game by six hours is a different matter. How far in advance was the time shift announced? In theory, someone might have boarded a plane in London in good time, only to discover that the game had been moved up and played while he was still in the air.
I know Trump was just reminding people that not a sparrow falls without his knowledge and intervention ... but it’s pretty dumb to put that extra PR knock on the U.S. team.
Not that anyone needs extra motivation to get up for a World Cup knockout game, but branding the U.S. team as having benefitted from improper outside interference is still dumb.
