The NBA announced Thursday that the “one free throw rule” will be “used at the summer leagues happening this month in Salt Lake City, Northern California and Las Vegas.”
The rule -- “designed to speed up play” -- means “any foul that would typically result in the awarding of one, two or three free throws will instead result in a single free-throw attempt.”
That attempt “will be worth the same total number of points as the free throws it replaces.” The G League has used this rule since 2019-20.
The rule “doesn’t apply to the entire game.” Standard free-throw rules -- two shots for a two-shot foul, etc. -- will be “utilized for the last two minutes of fourth quarters and in all of overtime.”

No! Just no!
Stupid experiment.
Wow, they could fit in a couple more commercials per game that way!
The three-point line was a pretty worthless experiment, right?
Here comes the “panty bunch” crowd.
Just throw bodies at the leading scorer and cut his production in half or worse.
Why don’t they raise the basket 24”. Lets see some real skill.
I like George Carlin’s rule.
In the last two minutes, you get 25 points for bouncing the ball off of an opponent’s head into the basket.
It was a good idea at the time. Now they need to get rid of it again.
The NBA is a solved game. So the rules need to be changed.
More Carlin:
Here’s how I’d change basketball. You could make basketball a lot quicker. You know what you do? You have a two second shot clock.
As soon as that ball is in bounds, get that sumbitch up in the air. I didn’t come to watch a game of catch. I’m looking for a four or five hundred point ball game! I’m a fan! I want six overtimes and a thousand points on the board! Another thing I would do for basketball, at the center court line, for ten feet on either side of the center court line, I would have a gasoline fire. You talk about the fast break, you’d see the *really* fast break.
Bring back “Three to Make Two”
Raise the friggin basket. Basketbrawl was not designed for 6’+ giants. Raise the basket and it becomes a game of skill, not genetics.
LoL
This is not intended to speed up games. This is to allow any game time shaved to be sold for more commercials.
I was just thinking that a week ago, like a premonition of seeing your comment today.
Why 24 inches?
Just like the stupid hydration breaks for the World Cup, even when the games are indoors.
“Always the dollars! Always the ____ing dollars!”
Just a number that would make easy dunks impossible. If they can still slam dunk it after it’s raised 24”, we raise it another 12”.
Then the game gets competitive.
Why 24”?
It would be in some number of feet above the floor. One more foot wouldn’t change much, but three more would really start to be too high.
At two feet higher you eliminate a bunch of the slam dunk stuff, but short lay-ups from inside the paint remain realistic...
Any change will throw every player off for awhile because the geometry they’ve built their muscle memory around wouldn’t be there, anymore.
