NBA to debut experimental ‘one free throw rule’ at Summer League
Sports Business Journal ^ | July 2, 2026

The NBA announced Thursday that the “one free throw rule” will be “used at the summer leagues happening this month in Salt Lake City, Northern California and Las Vegas.”

The rule -- “designed to speed up play” -- means “any foul that would typically result in the awarding of one, two or three free throws will instead result in a single free-throw attempt.”

That attempt “will be worth the same total number of points as the free throws it replaces.” The G League has used this rule since 2019-20.

The rule “doesn’t apply to the entire game.” Standard free-throw rules -- two shots for a two-shot foul, etc. -- will be “utilized for the last two minutes of fourth quarters and in all of overtime.”

The thug league is the thug league, a waste of time by any measure.

raise the baskets a bit. 6 inches to a foot?? The typical player today is much taller than when the 40’s and so on.

get rid of the 3 point line so there is offense and defense around the basket.

Can I raise a practical question at this point?

So if you’re fouled on a 3-pointer, you get one foul shot thats worth 3 points? I kinda like it!

The NBA is a shooter’s game now. In the All Star game, the 3 point competition is way more popular now than the slam dunk competition, which nobody even watches. So I propose four points if you make one from the logo and five points if you make one from half court.

Another example of sports being altered for the female audience.

“Chicks dig the long ball.”

The NBA doesn’t want 200 pts games (per team) and since the Modern NBA knows no defense they’d rather push this

It should be +1 no matter what except for the last 2 minutes in the 4th quarter (2 free throws, 3 free throws depending on the 2pt or 3 pt attempt).

I think if you are fouled, you should have the option to not shoot the free throws, and simply reset the shot clock.

Why reward a team for commiting fouls?

Nah, lose points for misses so they stop chucking it up at all cost

I completely agree. There should be no possible reward for a foul. What other sport carries a possible reward for a foul or penalty?

For a foul, there should be one free throw AND you retain the ball.

It should be handled like a technical. Who wants to see a game decided at the free throw line?

So basically you are always better off fouling someone vs letting them have a clean shot…

I was telling my son about that old rule a few months ago, he thought I was making it up LOL. “That’s one of the dumbest rules I’ve ever heard.”

The NBA is probably trying to figure out how it can adopt a designated hitter rule.

They should get rid of free throws completely. My idea is to handle fouls in basketball somewhat like how hockey does it. If a defensive player commits a foul, that player must leave the court, but not for a specified amount of time. Play would then resume with the offense throwing the ball in with a 5 to 4 player advantage.

The player who had to leave the court would not be allowed to come back onto the court until one of the following events occurs: the offense scores a basket; the offense takes a shot and misses and the defense grabs the rebound; the offense turns the ball over (steal, intercepted pass, travel, ball thrown out-of-bounds, any other rule violation).

In the case of a player on the offense committing a foul when his team has a 5 to 4 player advantage, the player who committed the foul would have to leave the court and the other team would then throw the ball in with a 5 to 4 player advantage.

I like it! The last two minutes of a basketball game is torture to watch with all the intentional fouls.

I would like wider use of the Elam Ending. At four minutes left the clock is turned off and a target score is set to the leading score plus seven points. First team to that score wins. It eliminates the incessant fouling and timeouts in the last few minutes. The leading team still has to score to win instead of trying to run out the clock. I thought it sounded ridiculous when I first heard of it, but with it the end of the game is still basketball instead of alternating muggings and free throws it is now.
