It surprisingly does hold up even today.
If you read it you would see that what the book says and our perceptions of it are two different things.
Achilles is a great warrior but in the illiad is a disgusting man who raps, desecrated the body of Hector, etc
Hector comes off as the more noble while Menelaus and the other Achaens look seedy.
It is quite a morality story.
Some of those ancient Greek or Roman plays are very readable.
Before you dive into Homer, try the works of Lucian of Samosata, a Syrian from the 2nd century and you would find his farces, etc very enjoyable!
