The new CA law requires automakers to provide an easy way for consumers to get the tracking on their car shut off under certain circumstances; the carmakers say they need at least a year more to do so.

Why would They (who is that??) need to track you in the first place?
It was CA that pushed Biden to mandate EV.
CA is NOT a friend of the Auto Industry.
If you ask a carmaker why they have this tracking, they say with a straight face that they do so for “emergency services” in case the driver gets in an accident. Sometimes the begrudgingly say that they have tracking to monitor service issues to better serve the driver. But what they won’t admit is that they want your car to be like your phone and computer and TV and pretty much every other device you have - a massive system of data gathering that they can mine and sell for profit. I really don’t even think the tracking is that nefarious as if the government wants to track every single car in the US. I really think this goes back to simple greed and information mining for profit. You are the product.

Good question. Some of us old guys have a limited attention span when watching a video. That’s why a brief synopsis of any video is always appreciated.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents several automakers, said automakers are implementing the victim protections required by the 2024 law but can’t yet comply with all of them. This is due to extensive engineering, testing, and integration among vehicle systems.
A bill before the state legislature — SB 719 –would grant an extension, but the alliance says it must be signed by July 1 to avoid affecting sales of both new and used cars in the biggest U.S. auto market. California accounts for about 10% of auto sales.
There have been past cases of “technology-enabled stalking” with vehicles. Hopefully, a solution will be reached to make cars safer in a more reasonable amount of time.
They track where you drive, where you make stops and how often you do these things. They sell this information to advertisers.
I’m waiting for the first car to have involuntary advertising videos running constantly at a loud volume just like too many gas pumps do now.

We recently switched to Allstate for insurance. They want me to allow them to track me on their app. I’ll get some vague “discount” if I do.
I’m sure it won’t be long until you won’t get renewed unless you let them track you.

LOL, you really don’t know the type of people running the country in DC back then?
Wait no longer. I just got a new car that has a screen (instead of a speedometer, tachometer, etc.) When I got in the car today, I got a Happy 4th of July message from the manufacturer followed by a prompt to push a button if I wanted information to “upgrade” my package to get enhanced traffic monitoring for my GPS feature. I am sure that will evolve into other advertisements soon enough - perhaps the deal will be that I will get free enhanced GPS if I allow an advertisement each time I get in the car.
I find it hard to believe that any CA legislation would appear to improve the privacy rights of the peasants ...

Yes and no...with the Tech companies and with Canadian banks, we have learned (or SHOULD have learned), that large companies will ALWAYS answer to the government that regulates them. So if we, again, get the Biden Girls, all that data that the car makers have will be turned over to the federal government...with a single phone call.
But you’re somewhat right...with the exception of being able to re-construct accidents (i.e., prove that the customer was speeding when he smashed into another car) - and maybe vehicle health monitoring for trends, the car makers don’t really care about the information they collect (but the government certainly may...and they’re just a phone call away).
THERE ARE IN CAR CAMERAS FOR UNDER $100 THAT CAN PROVE YOU DIDN’T CAUSE THE ACCIDENT-—IIRC-—MINOLTA
They also want to tax you for every mile you drive.
They dream about an individual carbon allotment. Just imagine. A daily, weekly, monthly, year and, yes, lifetime carbon allotment. Every action and product will have information on how much CO2 was used to produce it. If you use public transportation, and survive, you will be charged less (but not Zero).
If you exceed your daily CO2 allotment, you can ‘borrow’ from your weekly or monthly allotment. You could even borrow from your lifetime allotment. If you run out, exhaust your lifetime allotment, oh well. Time to ‘donate’ your life/body. I’m sure your blood and organs are a match for some government Apparatchik(s).

In that future you won’t be able to drive across states anymore. Also, they will charge you for airline flights you take.
