Well, the original phrase was “Better Red than Dead”, a defeatist sort of attitude.
There is an excellent book, “Blacklisted By History” that goes into detail about the McCarthy era. It should be required reading. One thing I noticed is how the same playbook is used. Notably attacking the messenger, and not the substance of allegations in any way.
The F.B.I. did great work in those days, but they couldn’t get the Justice Department under Truman to go after any of these guys. One thing, he got a hold of all the background investigation & loyalty files on State Department personnel and kept them at the White House, nobody was hardly allowed to see them. Even supposedly conservative Democrats like Henry Jackson and Symington would be exactly aware of what was in those files, yet say something completely different in open committee. Democrats used to publicly bash Eisenhower for the “Missile Gap” with the Soviets, for political advantage, when they knew damn well it wasn’t true. Same kind of mentality only in reverse. Maybe an imperfect analogy, but I lost a lot of respect for some of those old school congress guys. They defended the indefensible.
Recall Korea getting invaded in 1950, right after the Soviets got the bomb, the State department facilitated the rise of Chinese communists, and then the debacles in Yugoslavia and on and on.
It’s almost axiomatic that anything written about this era will always include “witch hunt” or “paranoia” or “red scare” somewhere in there, probably a couple others I’m forgetting.
I hadn’t realized the allegations under the surface at the time. McCarthy was accused as a homosexual, perhaps in part response that was how Whittaker Chambers and Alger Hiss got involved, apparently. Hiss was an erudite, urbane worldly sophisticate and Chambers was a little rough around the edges and not in the same league. How did their paths cross?

I would bet that the majority of Americans under the age of 50 think that Joe McCarthy was involved in blacklisting Hollywood actors. The left has been very successful in conflating the two anti-communist hearings going on at about the same time. The hearings about Hollywood were in the House of Representatives. Joe McCarthy was a Senator.

Blacklisted By History by M. Stanton Evans should be required reading for college students. What was done to McCarthy was a crime, & the leftists continue to do the same thing to others today.
They didn't. Hiss was convicted and sent off to prison in January, 1950, and McCarthy burst on the scene about a month later with his famous speech at the McClure Hotel in Wheeling, WV about Russian agents in the State Department. Incidentally, the hotel still stands, and although the facade is new, the room where McCarthy delivered that speech is still there.
I once interned with Stan Evans and got to know him--and his three-legged dog Zip--quite well. Blacklisted by History is a thoroughgoing defense of McCarthy. But if you want to read something that is not so lenghty, Ann Coulter provides an excellent overview of the McCarthy era in her book Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism.

The issue there (unstated in the article) is the homeowner is flying the flag on the common area of the HOA (the grass strip outside the sidewalk) , not his own property.
The HOA concern is that if one property owner can do this, others can fly things like gay flags.
It’s a lesson in how manipulated all media is.
He said that Conservatives disliked 2 things about Nixon. His Foriegn policy and his Domestic Policy.
And today? It is probably infested with just as many communists, joined by islamists.

McCarthy was an alcoholic but he was also correct.
Communist infiltration began before FDR in the State Dept and continued till about JFK.
Russia tried to get Uranium in 1941 under WW2 “Lend-lease” program thru the State Dept until Manhattan Project scientists killed it.
Its funny how this SHOULD have alerted Los Alamos they had spies working for them.
This is documented in Richard Rhodes book “Building the Hydrogen Bomb”
