European Soccer Fans Marvel at the Splendor of America’s Suburbs
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 27, 2026 | Owen Tucker-Smith and Chelsey Dulaney

Frank Everink hadn’t even heard of Kansas City.

But when the Dutch soccer fanatic saw his team would be playing along the border of Missouri and Kansas, he made a detour in his worldwide road trip. Everink got into his camper van and drove south from Toronto, making stops in Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Along the way, he—and other European fans who flocked to Kansas City for the World Cup—beheld the fruits of the American economy from a vantage point few foreign tourists typically see: suburban superstores, hulking plates of food, quiet streets. He marveled at the sprawling houses, a contrast from the tightly packed homes of the Netherlands.

“It’s spacious,” he said. “You go here for your shopping, and there for your dentist. People are so rich here. I think that’s why they can be so nice.”

The throngs of Dutch fans that flooded Kansas City and its suburbs this past week got a taste of day-to-day life in the U.S., reigniting a long-running trans-Atlantic debate: Who lives better, Americans or Europeans?

The Europeans had plenty of thoughts on American culture. “We are a bit shocked about all the food you are eating,” said Dutch national team superfan Sandra Tatee. Fans also balked at the size of the Costcos and the vastness of the highways.

In recent days, social media has been filled with videos of Europeans gawking at the staples of suburban American life—a two-car garage, a walk-in closet, a second refrigerator. One Brit went viral for trying Chick-fil-A for the first time: “That was absolutely banging,” he said. In another, he toured the inside of an American fire station, marveling at the size of the trucks and the station itself. “This is nuts, honestly,” he said.

All the places I would tell a visitor to America to stay the hell away from!

I just hope none of these visitors get mugged, or worse, while they're here.

There have been posts from Canada of visitors getting robbed. I am surprised we have not seen anything like that from here.

Indy has beautiful suburbs. Just stay away from areas around the downtown proper.

I find myself for the African teams, because if I’m going to cheer for a team of Africans, I want the ones from Africa to win.

That is because the Left always seeks to divide. The media tells Americans we do nothing right and everything in Europe is better while the Euro Media tells their subjects how horrible things are in America.

I went to a private girls” high school in Indianapolis. Ladywood, on the grounds of an estate some old catholic family (Fletcher?) had left to them. On Millerville (road?). we were driven into town every other weekend to shop. Lovely town then.

footnote: I got my hair done one saturday in town and when I got back, nun yelled at me “Ladywood girls do NOT get their hair done. still LMAO.

anyway, Indianapolis was fine then and so was chicago. I came from a suburb and could take the train downtown to shop or go to the dentist. Perfectly safe for teenage girl to walk almost a mile from the station to Michigan ave where the dentist was.

As long as no matches are scheduled within the city limits of Chicago, tourists — actually all people — have a decent chance to avoid mugging or murder.

My Mom had a job in downtown Syracuse, on Saturday night, when she was in high school. Took the bus home at midnight. On the rare occasion that a guy would get out of line, one or two of the men onboard would stand up and put the guy in his place. Have not been to Syracuse since th 80s but even then, as a grown man, I wouldn’t ride the bus in the daytime. Sad.

Parts of Indianapolis are nice, but like anywhere, you need to be careful about which parts. Around Indy, it’s very nice, pretty much anywhere, but I don’t mind if people think Hoosiers are lame. Go right ahead and think that.

Whatever happened to Indianapolis?

I thought it was nice, but I visited way back in the early 90’s.

"People are so rich here. I think that’s why they can be so nice.”

Wealth is worth working hard for. If anyone says, "Money can't buy happiness," shout BALONEY! as loud as you can!

The reason Americans are so rich--and so nice--is LIBERTY. And free market capitalism is LIBERTY.
